But one question - how are you certain the coin is a proof strike and not just a business strike?

Me too.
Hopefully I am incorrect and it IS a proof - that would be very cool.
Good luck!
I love it. But then I would, now, wouldn't I?

Certainly loos like a proof to me. Sometimes people overlook the obvious when coins are not perfect. I have already proven that with my proof Morgan dollar that people on this very message board deemed ugly business strike.

Hi
A love token is a coin "made" for a loved one. Usually a smaller denomination from what I have seen than the subject coin, the coin would be plucked out of circulation when new, or uncirculated, and taken perhaps to a jeweler who might specialize in these tokens. The reverse (most often I would think) would then be abraded smooth and hand engraved with a fancy scroll work design usually composed of the initials of the loved one.
Maybe a century or so later it appears online and we discuss it. No one knows who gave it, nor who received it, beyond 2 or 3 initials and there is the date on the coin. Perhaps the jeweler or engraver is identifiable by style. The one thing that is remembered, which needs no name at all, is the love between two people that created it in the first place.

Thanks for the great explanation. Better than the brothel angle I was thinking!
