How good is your eye...find the Cameo! **Answer revealed**

Just got my grades on a small economy submission back last night. There were several coins I thought had a great shot at being cameos, but only one received a CAM designation. Take a stab at which one it was?

Well I just checked the certs (after voting, of course).

Let me just say that I am surprised by the results.

You do realize you gave us the cert# for dime #1. And that the coins in your submission have sequential cert#s, right?

I do, and if anyone wants to "cheat" by looking at the cert #'s to prove how smart they are, that's their right...and to their detriment of having the joy of anwering the question without looking. To each their own.

Well I'll vote for #1 as it's the only one that doesn't look like all the others.

I would hazard a guess that the piece that did receive it does not look like its picture in hand.

Since it's probably a trick question, I'm gonna pick number one.

Well...as those of you who checked the certificate numbers have already figured out, the first 1954 dime is the one that received the Cameo designation.

I'm most disappointed in the Lincoln not being given the CAM, though I knew that was going to be a tough one to make, it is very heavily frosted as the photo shows, and I still haven't made one in a CAM after having submitted 5 now. This one has much stronger cameo contrast than my current 1952 Lincoln, and I was hopeful that it would make the cut for a CAM designation, it may be a good candidate for a conservation after the first of the year as it has a haze on the fields.

I never really doubted that the Franklin would get the CAM designation and am quite surprised that it was not deemed worthy of the designation.

Continuing to log tuition, I guess. Thanks for playing!

Would you mind sharing what all the grades were? So we don't all have to look them up individually?

The haze it's what's killing the CAM for the Lincoln. Frost on the devices is only half the equation for a CAM designation. Contrast between the devices and fields is the second part of the equation.

WOW! That was the one I thought least likely to be Cameo! I voted for the Lincoln cent.

Regardless of what PCGS says, the the cent, both nickels, and the half dollar, are all cameo.
The last dime is close. The lighting angle on the first dime is inconclusive.

I wouldn't have guessed the first dime, but it's not lit such that I can ascertain the degree of cameo it has. Of course, how do you know there wasn't a mechanical error within your order and one of the other dimes (like the third one) isn't the true cameo?

All great and the cent looks like a shore fire one but if I had to pick one I would vote 1954 Franklin.

Phil was able to send me an alternate TrueView of the 67CAM dime, and it's a cameo, and am glad that one got the designation to go along with the color. I decided that I prefer to have the color photo as the official TrueView representation of the coin, but this photo does show the contrast.

Sorry for the "non post" yesterday. I was at work and strange things can happen there......

Anyway, I voted for the 52 cent. Several others are borderline cam based on the photos, but worth a shot.

Based on the original photo of the '54 dime, I would not have guessed it was a cameo.

The toned 1954 dime and the 1952 cent are gorgeous. If the haze on the cent can be removed without changing the color or appearance of the cent I would resubmit it.
