I am not a fan of dipped-white 200 year old coins (though I admit to owning a few) but PCGS loves luster and a gentle dip is often forgiven.
I think GB did the right thing and was rewarded appropriately. I also think the True View images are terrific except the white balance is very wrong. The half is not pink. Lance.
Goldbully: Your 1826 CBH is very attractive, with high eye appeal, and is dripping with mint luster -- so an AU-53 grade makes perfect sense by today's grading standards. When that coin was originally graded in the Type 1 "Rattler" holder there was not as much commercial pricing disparity for CBH's between XF-45 and AU-53. Very Nice Coin!
I've also got an AU 1826 CBH with prooflike surfaces that I really like... Hope you don't mind me sharing...
Congrat's GB! That could have turned out very badly. I'm with RYK even in hindset. Six of one and half a dozen of the other. Gun against my head I probably would still take the 45/gold sticker/rattler combo or would have at least started there. For the record I have never submitted to CAC (tough I'm a fan), nor do I own a rattler.
I think a 45/gold sticker/rattler would probably bring more then a 53 non beaned coin. Let us know if this passes the green sticker test if you go that route. That would be interesting.

I'm hearing you MJ....however, I prefer the new holder and a 2 point jump in this case. Maybe I'll consider the green bean as you suggest. BTW Stuart, your 1826 is stunning......a real looker!!
AU53 in a nice holder is soooooooooooooooooooooooo much better than a rattler 45 and 20 gold beans! >>
>>
I completely disagree. First off I happen to believe the following: many have collections just of such older holders, now you allienate them.
there is a reason many want a classic coin in an older holder, the added security that for at least the last 20+ years it has been unmessed with.
if the coin hasn't been around the block (you can find out if that is the case) the coin has a high percentage of being undergraded and depending on the grade , way undergraded due to the conervative policies of the 1980's.
By sending it in now and receiving an au53 who says it isn't still undergraded, today the grading policies are vastly different than the 1980's, it could very well have dserved an au55. In th eold plastic with a gold bean the potential is unlimited, nothing prevents admireres from from thinking it coul dbe low ms. Now in a new holder it is like any other, no history, no wonder, basically all the potential has been removed. I rather have no celiing than a ceiling imho. >>

WHY!!!!???? >>
Heck, I would do it just to post it here and give you consternation The other thing is that, and this is not directed at the thread's OP in the least, not everyone needs a label to tell them what grade/value their coin is. I've been to enough shows to see dealers that price by the label vs dealers that price by the value of the coin itself....and I am not even an expert...just a normal joe.
The same thing for the slabs and the different companies. Not everyone needs to have the latest PCGS slab at any cost when a rattler/doily/etc is just fine for many.

Even at xf45 in a rattler holder, I think most people looking at the coin would see an au53 coin and would bid accordingly. The sole attraction of this upgrade, in my opinion, is for registry purposes. It is not difficult to find better graded examples of 1826, so not sure there was even much to be gained for registry appeal.
Regardless, congrats on having the good eye to spot the upgrade.
Another Rattler bites the dust. A darn shame imho but all that matters is your opinion. I'll take an old holder any day, Bean or nor Bean. Call me nostalgic I guess. Bummer....... But congrats on your upgrade.

On the brite side if you like I have some rattlers these crackouts just keep the hype about rattlers and OGH holders alive, and by reducing the number of rattlers in the wild the prices will continue to rise regardless of the coin.
Nice looking coin. Grading services re-describe the brute facts of submitted coins over and over using different schemes, but fortunately the coins remain unchanged by all of this. For anyone to admit that they'd pay more for the coin in any particular holder is to admit their collecting fetish involves more that coins alone. Aspirin won't cure that.

You sure nailed it DHeath. I am happy that GB is happy, but there is NO WAY that coin would have come out of that holder to go into a new one under my watch. But I am happy for him...I really am.
<< <i>Is Goldbully sending the AU53 to CAC ? I wonder what he would do if CAC declined to give it a sticker...... >>
He already got his money's worth with the entertainment value of this thread, methinks. It (the coin and grading saga) is what it always was: Added expense for a professional opinion.
Good coins always sell and strong opinions always buy them.
So true. I don't think the price on this coin changed if sold to a seller in-hand. I would offer the same price for this coin if it was in an aitight with no label grade on it. But there are a lot of Kool-Aid drinkers that buy coins based on what the label says and have no clue if the coin in the slab is even a coin. So I guess it will now sell for more even though it is the same coin with a few more dollars now invested in it. It is GB's coin and he can do whatever he wants with it, so as long as he is happy all is good. I am surprised that the new images of the coin light the coin in a way as to hide some of the wear. Point taken if looking at coins with this brand of images.

I do not care for Rattlers, so I would have regraded it. If it were an OGH, I would have gone for the gold (or, in this case, platinum) sticker.
They don't stack and they don't fit in the PCGS box.
And they are ugly and do NOTHING for the coin.
RR's senerio(sp) about buying a 62 and 63 anacs coin and sending to ngc for regrade and getting 64's just proves the point about ngc.
53 does not surprise me. Nice luster and detail.
