On my latest PCGS submission, one of my coins went from AU50 to XF45....Apology to PCGS for my stupi

Could someone explain why this happened since it was not a "Guarantee Resubmission."

Guarantee Resubmission

I submitted this 1828 CBH for Secure Plus Service and TrueView in a PCGS AU50 slab as a re-grade....it was downgraded to XF45.

The TrueView image is not available yet, but I will post it when available.

Thanks for your replies.

When you sent the coin in for the secure holder it was removed from the standard PCGS Holder and Graded. This time the grade was only XF-45. They will send you a check for the difference between AU-50 and XF-45. Now that it is in a secure holder it can never upgrade.

I'd give PCGS a call in the morning. Sounds like an oversight and I'm sure you will be reimbursed for the loss in value. I doubt it will be much more than $100 though.

It was either a mistake which will be corrected, or a downgrade for which you will be compensated.

    As for this quote:

<< <i>Now that it is in a secure holder it can never upgrade. >>

    That is simply not true.

Were you hoping for an upgrade, or were you just sending it back to PCGS for Secure slabbing and TrueView image?

If it was the second mentioned, why would you have asked for a "regrade" and not just a "reholder" on the submission form?

Not quite so. Any coin submitted for a regrade, Secure Plus or otherwise, can go up or down in grade.

I was looking for a + or better.....as well as the Secure Plus slab, along with TrueView.

Believe me, I'm not complaing as I had two very positive surprises I will be posting soon. image

I just realized I got the line items mixed up...I apologize to PCGS.
    The AU50 went to AU53, not XF45......image
Sorry for this thread on my BIG mistake.....image
  • Well thanks for posting it anyway. Is it really true that any PCGS graded coin sent in for regade will be accompanied with a payment if it downgrades? That is new news to me.

It's called a "Grade Guarantee". However, this guarantee and the difference in price is based upon the current market and not necessarily reflective of what the PCGS Price Guide states.

Goldbully - you had me there for a minute!

The Regrade service is designed for the submitter's protection. There is no risk of down grading as there would be if you cracked it out and resubmitted it raw.

As with every PCGS submission after reviewing the coin we determine that it has a problem or was over graded we will contact you and offer to buy the coin or return the coin in a lower grade plus a check for the difference in value. This is your choice. We would never just send it back.

    -----

Now that it is in a secure holder it can never upgrade.

This is completely false. What it means is that the coin will never be upgraded due to artificial toning or some other deception. It can be upgraded if the graders believe it is warranted.

It seems that there is always something to learn in this grading business....Thanks for the clarification, Don.
I hope you don't pay any attention to MJ! image

WOW, I could see this coin in a 55 holder easy.

    Very nice CBH!
  • BustHalfBrianBustHalfBrian Posts: 4,183 ✭✭✭✭
Neat colors on that CBH, Goldbully - I like it!

If I saw that coin in a 50 holder, I'd be shocked - so kudos to PCGS for getting it right at 53 the second time around. image

The initial post puzzled me, because usually, the difference between a 45 and 50 is a matter of original mint luster. The coin either has some of it or it doesn't. This is not difficult to determine. Such a coin with some original mint luster would not be in a 45 holder unless it was net graded to XF 45 for another problem.
