Doily Holder Census, 466 listed

Even if a sample slab were to be determined to be an actual variety slab as opposed to an error produced slab as billet7 suggests, it should not matter and should not count as an actual variety slab only because such sample slab was never actually put into production as a production run labeled slab for actual use in coin grading for submitted coins to be graded.

In fact, no sample slabs should ever be considered a variety slab because many of them are just proposed designs or just what if slabs . But that makes them just as interesting or sometimes even more interesting because they are so rare. In a sense, they are like the patterns of the 19th through the 21st century.

Just as an update, PCGS has been researching this sample slab for nearly a year now and is real close to giving me the results of their findings. We shall soon find out the story behind this sample slab. I shall forward such results as soon as possible.

Very hard to tell from those photos I think. Could just be some toning that is ok on a RD coin, or it could be some mellowing of the red color which would be more appropriate on a RB designated coin. In any event, the coin is a top pop as a 66RD and I can't imagine there are too many top pop coins still in Doily holders!

Will let you know when it arrives - since I had the top IHC with varieties set on the PCGS registry a few years ago, I feel comfortable telling R from RB.

Unless the word doily is listed in the title, I don't think there is an effective way to search for them at Heritage or TT or even eBay.

Hey gents . . I know it is subtle, and you undoubtedly haven't noticed, but someone added a 1937-D "3-Legger" Buffie to the Census !!!!!!

Yeah, I'd love to have that 1799 Dollar, but to match the dollar set, I'll see it with a Proof 2-Center, Proof 3-Center, the only three Doily Barbers known (dime, quarter, and half), and now . . . the Buffie 3-Legger!!!

Simply put . . . yes. The Roosies appear with some regularity on eBay and occasionally elsewhere. Of course, it is all relative and depends upon the definition of 'many'. The Forum members differ over what is meant by 'many', 'rare' 'scarce'. and I fully understand that. The samples might seem to have a cachet' of being doubly interesting, being Doilies as well as samples, but that uniqueness is offset by relative ease of finding them.

Oreville and I have been talking about how to number the various Doilies.

The configuration is the same as the 2.0, 2.5 and 3.5 generation holders but on a Doily background. Orevilles example w/o the bottom white stripe is an exception. We suggest:

3.0/2.0 or
3.0/2.5
3.0/3.5

Or maybe 3.2, 3.25 and 3.35 - this would work easier for keeping photos in order.

What do you think??

I agree with that... whatever the numbers are that eventually get assigned to each sub-type of the Doily, a single number would make it much easier for everyone to get on board and speak the same language

My doily sample slab without the bottom white strip should not be assigned a number only because it was never put into general production and up to this point, only general production slabs have been assigned a number.

This also avoids confusion between general production slabs and sample only slabs.

Updated...finally, sorry for the lag on this one, thanks everyone for the corrections and submissions.
Got a couple cool new additions, a possibly unique sample slab, a seated proof dollar, and a few others...always interesting this doily stuff!

Still looking for any quarter in a doily holder if you know of anyone who has one that needs to part with it! Just FYI! Possibly willing to trade two doilies for one quarter doily.
