I like it. That is a coin that every collector will need for their set. You made a good buy IMO. I do not think that these(keys i.e.) will come down in price anytime soon-especially undamaged pieces. JMO-Bob

Thanks means a lot I was hoping I did well I was nervous about a mid grade like this one in G-06 and not G-04 or VG-08 but looked around and to me this one has a very nice strike and nice look so decided to go with it. I decided that I am going to collect Barber quarters and stick with it that is why I made my move on a more expensive coin...I just put 2 coins up for sale on Ebay that will help me cover this purchase at least have way that is.

Adding a link is not hard at all. Simply copy the address of the auction and then hit the http button and paste the link in it. Then push the OK button. Then put whatever word or phrase where it says "text" and that will be the link. Press the OK button again and you are set. You can either type in a description before or after the link.

Thanks I think I get it will test it out another day!! That is what working in Human Resources will do to a man after 6 years you become useless in any other science branches (ex: computers...I only do the same functions all day long so not learning new ones kinda shows)!!! But by luck my brother is a computer science major so he helps out a lot...maybe a little to much...lolll I should try to learn on my own but if I mess up my computer he will be even more mad having to fix it so there lies my rot of incompetence.

Detail-wise the coin looks nice for a G-06, but the surfaces on this coin are definitely not original. Looks to have been fairly aggressively cleaned and has retoned since.

Does this hurt it's value? Or is it still a good purchase?

Absolutely it hurts the value. For what it's worth, on Collectors Corner, Harry Laibstain has a PCGS G06 for $950, which I think would be a slight step up from the one you have. There is also an NGC/CAC G06 that is not imaged, but I would be willing to bet that it would be the nicest of the three for $975. I don't know that dealer. Here is a Link.

Ah well I am still happy with my coin I love it's look!!! I am sure when it comes time to sell down the road I will do just fine on it. It may have had that look for other reasons as well the coin is from 1896 so a lot could have happened to it during that time period.

I've seen VG08 Barber Quarters with less detail than that one so that part I do like. But the surfaces aren't natural either as others have mentioned... appears that the coin may have been net graded down to G06 because of that. Still a key date in a PCGS holder so it will always in demand.

How bad does it affects it's value? Was 1050$ to much money for this coin?

How much should I have paid for such a coin then?

The last few that sold at auction according to CoinFacts were in the $800-$850 range.

    Does that include buyers premiums?

Yes it does. I think a nice, original example (CAC worthy) would be worth $950-1050. The ones bringing $800-850 are the lower end of the grade, which is what I would classify yours as.

IMO, definitely a cleaned coin, but has plenty of details for a G6. Also has a noticeable rim bump.

The cleaning certainly doesn't help its value, whether in a PCGS slab or not.

As was already mentioned it's a demanded date/mint so it will always have that on its side. Frankly it's nearly impossible to buy a PCGS rare date/mint coin of any series on eBay for less than retail+ since sellers must factor in all of their fees.

Thanks guys I will stick with the one I purchased over time it will appreciate in value that should cover any loses made today I simply prefer the look and detail of the one I got...may be cleaned but the eye appeal attracts me much more than the other ones I was able to locate. The details are just so much more present on the coin I purchased than ANY other I have seen in this lower grade bracket. Again thanks I appreciate the input and comments. I am quite sure in a couple years time I will find one that suites me better and I will simply put this one up for sale and pay the difference at that time. I will go for one in F-12 PCGS CAC when the opportunity comes knocking. I should have paid 850$ to 950$ but when I commit to buy I keep my word!! I am quite certain I will find a buyer since this is one of the big 3 in the barber quarter collection.

On another note I do not like the the coin graded VG-08 above the whole coin just simply turns me off!!

My other 2 options would have been either a 1937 3 legged buffalo in VF-35 PCGS CAC or a 1872 2 cent in F-15 PCGC.

    Ebay item #'s 350619246611 and 180864230988.

    I guess another day.

    Matrix,

I suggest you keep your acquisitions private if you are uncomfortable with people's opinions. For every 1 compliment you will get 5 insults. We are collectors, typically type A personalities... So if you like the coin, and are comfortable with the price.... Just put it in the safety deposit box and march on! You paid a little more than trends for this piece... That's ok if you like the coin, if not I suggest you reading a lot more before spending big money!

    Cheers,

Type A personality in short means we think we know everything, and that others actually care what we think when in reality we don't really care if others want our opinions because we will give it anyway regardless of whether it was asked for or not, because after alll we know what's best image

I would disagree with the notion that you might want to keep your purchases quiet. Certainly, some folks tend to disparage any coin shown, but you also appear to be buying ahead of your knowledge. Buying such as that can lead to very poor choices so it might benefit you to obtain various points of view. For what it is worth, I do not believe that making a bad buy will pan out over time because of the opportunity costs associated with the bad buy. As for this coin, I'm not in love with it, but I'm not in love with most coins.

The OP's coin looks sadly yet definitely lightly cleaned with baking soda/water. Many were, so nothing to be ashamed of.
Still gradable and still presentable- just doesn't get to sit at the grown-ups table.

based on what I have read up to 80% of coins graded by NGC and PCGS have been somewhat cleaned...I thin this is normal because this coins are so old that could have happened any time from their creation till now.
  • Options
    TomB

I agree that is why I post here. I am not worried about this coin because a key date will appreciate and there is always a buyer for such coins I could have done better but anyone buying a coin could have done better IF ONLY they had found that PERFECT coin right off the bat. I live in Canada my options of finding that PERFECT coin are much more limited than for you guys living in the U.S. I will bring my coins to a major show (Orlando) in the U.S probably in 2013 or 2014 and simply trade them for ones I can find on the floor that I like more I will pay the difference!! With 1500 dealers on the floor I am quite sure I will find a better one and a dealer willing to trade up and take the cash difference.

    braddickbraddick Posts: 25,195 ✭✭✭✭✭
    80% sounds a tad high.
And, when I say, 'cleaned', it is market acceptable-gently cleaned, no hairlines- just a glossy fade to the worn surfaces (to most- certainly not all) and gradable with PCGS/NGC.
  • Options
    braddick

The 80% figure came from various websites. So you do not like my coin at all? It is the details that drew me to purchase it I have yet to see another one in G-06 with that much meat on the bone (solid details...the coin in person will probably not look as much cleaned than on the picture with a camera)!! Could the coin have been left original of course would it be graded higher probably yes for sure...could I have purchased at this time at say double price no I like 99% of you guys have bills to pay and a limited coin budget.

I meant that if I lived in say New York or some other huge town I could go out all day and walk into coin shops and compare coins better than I ever could on the internet. Yes you can do this over the internet but 1st class service is just not there. Of course I can spend a full day or 2 on the net finding one but then again 90% of dealers DO NOT ship to Canada (I have spoken to about 20 of them and I would say about 18 do not). So this leaves me with fewer options and then add the fact that I must find dealer I trust and that offers me the chance to upgrade my coin down the road at full value of my coin versus theirs and a cash difference. My other option is to ask my main dealer in Canada who goes to 2 major auctions a year to find the coins I want that suit my needs...but he will want probably a 10% commission on each and every coin I buy. So I will simply trade them in with say David Lawrence and upgrade them over time or with the company called U.S coins or some other contact I have that is trust worthy.
