Doubled dies are varieties of a particular date. I'm not sure that makes them a "key date" though.

I actually own no coins currently that would be considered a key date...probably a 1902-S Barber Half is my closest thing to it. I find semi-keys with superior eye appeal a much better value over key dates, and a lot harder to hunt for. To each their own, good luck on the key dates image

Key dates in my series are 1841, 1848 CAL, 1854-S, 1856-D, 1864, 1865 and 1875. Most are out of my reach.

    Here is a semi-key I own.

I don't know if this is considered a key date. (Is there a dfference between a key date and a rare date?) but I have a certified VF 1846 dime.

Not a huge collector of key dates but I do buy them when I can find nice ones.

1895 O Barber Dimes in fine and very fine are the only two US key dates I can think of.

Let's see -- not as many as some. "Traditional" key dates:

    1877, 1908-S, 1909-S Indian, '09-S VDB, 14-D, 31-S in cents

    1885, 1886, 12-S for nickels

    1895-O, 1916-D dimes

    1892-O,S 1897-S, 1914-S, 1932-D, S quarters

    1892-O, 1896-S, 1921-PDS halves

    1921 Peace

Of them, the 1877 is the most individually desireable.

    << <i>Nothing I would personally consider a key date, although I have a few semi-keys. >>

Yep, some semi-Key dates.......but mostly high condition rarity. One step down from the next from where it jumps exponentially.

Many may disagree with the way I collect but it works for me.

I don't think anyone could look at the pictures of your coins and see the obvious joy and excitement you have for collecting and disagree with the way you collect.

It would be easier if you take out the 19th century coins out of that list and rename it the 20th century key coin list. A separate list for the 19th century coins would be a tough project to work on in itself.

Many of thr coins you have listed with ?? are probably considered semi-keys. i do not think the 1983DDR or 1984DDO cents would qualify for this list.

The 1916 SLQ would probably be considered a key?

In uncirculated grades, the 1921-S walker would be considered a key?

Also perhaps adding gold coins in a separate 20th century coinage list? You may want to call this a copper, nickel and silver 20th century list. Otherwise, you leave out too many key gold coins which so few can afford!

    Have fun with the list!

Off the top of my head:
large cents: 1799, two '23/2's, '39/6, along with semi keys like the '09, '11, and '21
    multiple 09S IHC's and Lincolns.
    1880 shield nickel, business strike.
All buffalo nickel keys except the overdate and 16/16.
    1894, 1895 dimes.
    Several 21P and D dimes.
32D and S quarters (which are far more common than than the semikey Barbers I'm not listing)
All the walker keys, including five 21P's in Fine or better.

Ignoring rare die varieties that are beyond the Red Book's radar:

    1811 ½¢ PCGS 8
    1922 No D Strong Rev 1¢ PCGS F/cleaned
    1822 10¢ PCGS 3
1844 10¢ PCGS 8 (OK, more of a pseudo key)
    1938-D 50¢ PCGS 63
    1903-S Micro S $1 PCGS 30

Also a handful of semi-key dollars or dates that are not really keys in the grades that I have them in, such as AU58 94-O, 96-O, 83-S. I don't have the "big ones" (89-CC, 93-S, 94), though.

Sold most,if not all of my "key-Date" coins. One I do still have and probably will never sell,a 1909sVDB in a PCGS grade F (12).I'll keep for the history part.If the price would jump tremendously, maybe,I would sell?I'm expecting because of the Steven Spieberg movie "Lincoln" the coin might rise, who knows?
