And you can bet that APMEX won't be paying the usual Ebay seller fees that the rest of its competition on Ebay pays. It's got to be a real sweetheart deal for them...
Figuring typical premiums and the "normal" rates a seller would have to pay, they can't be making more than $5 bucks on those rolls of 2012 Eagles. Per eBay rules they shouldn't be getting a 20% discount nor a boost for Best Match as they offer neither a 1 day handling time nor a 14 day return policy. So in reality those 2012 Eagle Rolls at the current price would have to be loss leaders if they played by the same rules as everyone else.

And this will cost ebay in individual sellers who will choose not to compete with someone they really cannot compete with. Wonder what affect this will have on MCM's bullion effort on ebay.
The things I don’t always agree with are always worth considering.
Dealing wirh APMEX has got to be safer for buyers than dealing with some anonymous Joe Blow with an eBay account. Some smaller sellers get squeezed out- so what? Isn't buyer safety the most imortant thing there is?

Buyer protection that is in place protects buyers but currently at the exense of paypal and ebay. Hi I'm Joe Blow selling on eBay and I approved this message.
BTW bullion is exempt from the 14 day return policy. APMEX is not the first big bullion dealer on eBay. They are in good company with Scottsdale and several others that I can't remember. I seriously doubt that they got a "sweetheart" deal in fees. eBay does not need APMEX as much as APMEX needs eBay to sell their bullion. After all, this is a second go around for APMEX on eBay.

APMEX is getting some unique features such as updated pricing tied to spot. Makes one wonder what other unique features APMEX is enjoying.

I agree, they have the software to accomplish that for them. BTW all of their auctions are BIN's. Us peons would have to go in manually, which is allowed on BIN's, to change it every 10 minutes....NOT.

APMEX will cannibalize traffic from ebay to their own website. Unless ebay is very smart about incentives flowing both directions (ebay <-> apmex). Somehow I don't think ebay is that smart. Probably more of a proof of concept of some new pricing mechanism.

APMEX sweetheart deal = more bucks to ebay......some sort of soft or hard money back to APMEX ...
I am not a bullion buyer but what does the local B & M store sell silver ASEs for? Are they ten dollars over spot like when you buy from ApmBay? No returns accepted but eBay buyer protection applies. I bet APMEX hates that they have to accept Pay Pal and not bank transfers. The buy it now is the credit card price on the APMEX site so they aren't loosing much. They got to have somebody watching the spot on silver incase it jumps and they're loosing money.

Sounds a tad callous. I've purchased from a large amount of small sellers on ebay and ALWAYS had a positive transaction. Iv'e also dealt with apmex and they have provided many items that were subpar and not per description, sometimes erroneous altogether. Dealing with them to straighten it out was not enjoyable. They are a bigger machine and customers get treated as though just another cog. At least that was my experience on multiple occasions. I for one don't see to much positive in it.

When buying bullion, I would think price is equally important. APMEX prices are higher than other reliable established gold and silver bullion dealers.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.
I have what might be an interesting angle on this story. I'm from Minnesota and have been following the Coin Bullion Dealer legislation closely (blatantly unconstitutional but that will be for another post some time).
Back when the legislation was being proposed ebay got all excited, and then got the MN legislature to carve out an exception for them.
1.12 Subd. 3. Bullion coin dealer. (a) Subject to the exceptions in paragraph (b), a 1.13"bullion coin dealer" means any person who buys, sells, solicits, or markets bullion 1.14coins or investments in bullion coins to consumers and is either incorporated, registered, 1.15domiciled, or otherwise located in this state, or who does business with a consumer 1.16domiciled, residing, or otherwise located in this state. 1.17(b) A bullion coin dealer does not include any of the following persons:
...
2.1(4) an auctioneer who auctions coins at auction on behalf of an owner, if the 2.2auctioneer does not take title or ownership of the coins, or the operator of an Internet Web 2.3site that allows users to offer the sale of coins through that Web site, does not set the price, 2.4is not the seller of record, and does not take possession of any coins to be offered;
I wonder if this new joint venture now means they have to comply with the legislation. After all, a joint venture means they have part ownership in the company that is selling the bullion.
I've bought from APMEX via Ebay the last 3 times because shipping is only $4.95 on ebay, but, $24.95 on APMEX. $20 is $20...that's almost an extra oz of Ag!
<< <i>Does APMEX get a break on the listing and/or final value fees? >>
you bet. One of the uses of fees is for ebay to fund/eat the loss on bad transactions. Teaming up with APMEX on an exclusive website greatly reduces ebay's exposure to risk on the transactions.
The things I don’t always agree with are always worth considering.

Less risk for the buyer and for ebay claims when buying from a reputable, well known dealer on ebay. I have quite a few bad bullion purchase experiences with anonymous sellers on ebay, but was willing to take the risk because buyer protection has made me whole every time. The claims process is a time consuming hassle and it ties up your funds temporarily. Most ebay buyers would pay a tad more (as long as price is competitive) to purchase from a known seller. Peace of mind does have a price when internet shopping.

"Currently at the exense of paypal and ebay" and sellers too, actually. And yes, it is.

The change certainly doesn't add any risk for buyers.

Yes, just as many of eBay's other changes have done, it will.

As soon as eBay bans the sale of coins, anyway. Until then...
