I've heard of gradflation, but this is ridiculous

I'm no professional grader, but I somehow can't make this half dime to be PCGS MS-63. Have grading standards declined that much?

Picture is so blurry, maybe that is why we cannot see the PCGS holder. image

    Why don't you ask him.

There must be some mistake in the listing, photo mixup, etc. That is no slabbed coin in that photo nor pic of the TPG holder present. It looks like a raw low grade circ in a cardboard 2x2. Why would you even think this is a slabbed coin?

I did ask him why he posted the wrong pics.

    We'll see what he says.

Here's my question and his answer:

    Dear 126pumper,

How about posting pictures of the right coin? This is obviously not a PCGS coin, nor is it MS63. It's a used hunk of silver.

    Dear bobandlinda1,

I appreciate your interest but the coin in the picture is the one being sold thank you

Looks like a well-worn test strike where the dies were too far apart to impart a solid struck image. Not sure where all that wear and tarnish came from, but it looks MS63 to me otherwise.

    Cheers!

    Sent this to the Seller:

Dear 126pumper,Where's the PCGS slab and label required in coin sales suggesting a coin is PCGS graded? That's one well-circulated coin in the pic and it is not in a PCGS slab. Is the coin depicted the one for sale here? If so you have grossly overrated its description. As such, this auction needs to be shut down.Cheers!Kirk

Looks like he did remove the "PCGS MS-63" reference so I chalk this up as another CU coin board success. The dude was reall pizzed off about it though.

    LOL

Looks like this was added to his description:

"IF YOU DON'T HAVE A LIFE AND FEEL LIKE BEING A GRAMMAR POLICE SKIP MY AUCTION AND STOP HARASSING ME"

I guess he thinks correct and authentic certification is grammar.

"Why would you even think this is a slabbed coin?"

When I first posted this, to answer Cougar1978's question, of course I allowed for the very real possibility that there had been a mistake in attaching the correct photo, as the photo was obviously not MS-63, nor was it of a PCGS slabbed coin. I just thought it was funny, particularly in light of the seller's glowing description and comments about the coin. But as this evolved, with the very capable assistance of several members here, it became quite apparent that the seller was intent upon deceiving the public, and was completely unapologetic. His rather nasty replies make that clear. Also, did anyone else notice that when ACSB posted the link on Worthpoint for this specific PCGS coin, it was for an 1853 dime, and not a half dime? The deception was perhaps greater than first thought. In any event, we successfully eliminated an obvious fraud, and possibly prevented some unknowing buyer from losing money. $250, indeed. Anyone could see that coin was not worth one penny more than $200 .... not one penny.
