When I lived in eastern Massachusetts I ran across a gravestone for a Civil War soldier, Randal Holbrook, who was killed at Antietam. The marker was in a Stoughton, Massachusetts cemetery. As soon as I saw the date, September 18, 1862 I knew there had be a connection, and then I noted on the marker than he had "fell at Antietam." Obviously he was wounded during the battle and died the next day.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?
  • And a day that the Union might have ended the war, thanks Bill for bringing it to our attention. I would post my Antietam but I have pc issues!!

If my camera hadn't croaked I would post some pictures I took at Antietam this spring, the most interesting for me anyway was a little minie ball shaped memorial for the Massachusetts regt. that fought near the Burnside Bridge. The nice thing about visiting Antietam as opposed to so many other important battle sites is that it is largely as it was back then and there are not Wal-Marts and Arby's every 25ft like at Gettysburg, Richmond etc.

Having lived in Atlanta for ~22 years, I've driven by Cowpens, SC quite a few times (on my way to other cities). I have never taken the time to stop and visit. Perhaps now I will. Our Civil War has always interested me because it's impossible for me to imagine us having one today (while some other nations in turmoil, not so much).
