The only coin dealer/B&M I associate with here in Austin doesn't carry a gun. They carry an entire selection of guns. I guess it would be more appropriate if the question asked "does your gun dealer carry coins?"
Mine puts a classic Colt45 wild west revolver in his show case to look like part of a display. (that way it does not stand out too much) but it is the real deal and ready to go!
It bothers me most when the one who has a gun thinks they're invincible because they are carrying a gun. Gun or no gun nobody is immune to an ambush and no weapon can guarantee safety.

Too many "manly men" think that carrying a gun means that nothing can happen and they can save the world. Once I hear anything like that come out of their mouths, I tune them out and realize they are likely not someone I would want to be near in case of an issue that required a gun/protection......they talk the talk, but real man just walk the walk.
Both carry a Colt .38 Special, with 2 or 3" barrels. Pretty potent piece for being so small. I believe you have no choice as a B&M owner. Being armed is a must, IMO.
The employees of my favorite B&M were always packing with more guns laying around. It did not bother me as i may have been packing a few myself. I thought guns and coins went together. Ron Swiney died recently and the store is now close. John has a coin store around the corner from them and he always has a gun on his hip.

Yes...well not on him when he's in the shop...but in Texas, concealed weapons are everywhere. When he's in the shop, his nickel plated S&W .357 magnum sits prominently on the shelf of the open safe...for ALL to see.
PS: I'm almost certain there are others hidden well away from the safe, like maybe a sawed off shot gun under the bar in an old Western movie.

I don't know why having a gun would make one feel invincible unless he were already delusional. If I were ambushed, I'd rather have access to a gun and have a fighting chance, than not.
I don't know anyone who thinks that carrying a gun makes him manly or gives him any special ability to save the world. Anyone who thinks that is prejudiced and ill-informed. Most legal gun owners are quite responsible. What is it with anti-gun folks, anyway? The shooting galleries tend to happen when nobody but the bad guys have guns.

At the coin shop I go to once a year at the beach...an old man sits at a desk at the back of the shop facing the door. He doesn't talk much. He just sits at the desk. I suspect he is armed.

None of the dealers that I visit (not many, not often) here in GA open carry.
Does remind of my when I was a kid, though. My dad worked for a Jewelry store in the central business district of New Orleans.
Concealed and out of view under the glass display they had revolvers ever three feet. And they had about 30 foot of display case. Each desk, which were in open view of the floor behind the display cases had a holstered revolver out of view. Behind the display case there were marked sections that were bullet proof and those sections had small gaps you could return fire out of. At 4:30 PM, closing time, all of the jewelry was moved to safes, along with all of the guns, except three. Everyone went out of the door armed. Kind of eye opening to me to know that even if you can't see the guns they might be there, in quantity!
If he doesn't, he should. I'm going for my CCW license this fall. Not easy in CA but with all the coin dealer murders/robberies in the news I think I can swing it. --Jerry

However, I believe that those that are quiet about it, don't announce it, and do what needs to be done, are the ones I would rather be around than someone trying to be a John Wayne cowboy. Internet or in person, the folks I hear talk it up are not usually the best shots. Quite possibly, they would also be trigger itchy or too nervous.
The ones who go to the range, don't make a big deal of it, and that think ahead.....those are the ones I would prefer.
For the OP.....sure, some of them carry guns. I've seen a few on a few hips. Some others may have them concealed. In this type of business, I wouldn't blame them. Same token, none of them rely solely on the guns. They have alarm systems, locks, multiple employees in the store at all times, etc.
Also, thankfully, the ones at the shows don't brandish any firearms. With some of the dealers, that is a good thing. I don't trust a few of them and it WOULD make me nervous around them as I think a few aren't exactly the most level-headed.
Both my self and my security guy carry weapons on our side open and exposed, plus have two additional clips at arms length. Also, a shotgun and ak-47 at arms reach. Plus we have a buzzer on the door to deter an ambush from occuring. (if you ever watch many of the convienient store robberies or other robberies at at places, the thugs usually come in packs of 2-4 people and barg in with weapons already out and usually have face masks , bandannas ans other type of disquisng apparel present. We have full open view of the parking lot from the shop. So we can pick up on suspicious activity prior to them coming in. In the winter, I place an extra sign out that states no one allowed in with heavy coats, hats or bandannas and such. If a car load of thugs come up, we usually only allow 2 at the most at one time in store anyway.
My customers dont mind it at all, in fact many feel safe in the store, and I always hear them mention it to others.
some really hilarious comments pertaining to "walk the walk" etc. LOL
One big reason to have one in plain view or boldly displayed on your side where ALL of your customers and potential THUGS and their thug friends can see it is to be a deterrent.
1st I like the thought of open carrying, IMO, I think it makes people who might think about trying something think twice about it. A deterrent IMO honestly
2nd. Just becuase I carry a gun in the store does not make me feel invincible, that is the last think I think. It scares me everyday i am there the thought of getting robbed again. We have them in the store in various locations but do not carry openly. Our security cameras are actually a good deterrent; I know of a few times where I'm certain we were being cased but upon noting the cameras the would-be perps left rather quickly.
"Back in the day" when I worked in a local B&M, we had another local shop where the workers all carried their oversized, crome-plated pistols in man-sized shoulder harnesses wrapped snugly around their undersized t-shirts showing off their attempts at body building. It was great! When those of us in our shop would visit them, we would go on and on about how cool it was.
What they never understood is that what was cool to us was how their appearance (and attitude) scared off so many sellers that would come to our shop to sell their coins and PMs. Funny thing was ... we were equally as armed, just in nice clothes, "hidden" weapons, and a polite demeanor. My boss was very smart that way.

Back in 1981 i was being robbed at gun point by 4 crips in my coin shop in Bell Calif. I was alone . Only reason i am still alive is my gun was tucked under my shirt hidden . Like one of the other dealers comments , i to was across the ocean in 1967 and have never forgot We had a gun fight and 1 dead 1 wounded the rest went to jail . I was unharmed. Was advised to close my shop never return or the crips would try payback. I closed that day and left after 6 years + hard work starting the shop. So Better to have a gun and not need it then to need a gun and not have one. When i opened my next coin shop i had a gun plus a trained German Shepherd never had another problem . But there were a few people who came in looked around and left fast . Ron

Local B&M has a full time armed gaurd during the day. They mostly deal in bullion and ignore the small customer unless they are selling PM's. Its kind of annoying haveing an armed guard scan you and watch every move as you skim through 2x2 boxes..."Im just reaching for my loupe, I swear."
Well one time the guard forgot to take off his side arm as he left for lunch, went into the nearby mall and ordered a big mac...we several customers called the police. Swat team shows up and the whole works. Its now a running joke among local dealers.
