NEWP.....1924-S Buffalo.....GTG.....Grade Posted

Took a little while to find this date with a solid strike. There are a couple more that I know will be just as challenging, if not more.

Also, edit to add.....that there is quite a bit of underlying luster that I can't quite capture in a pic. Rotated under light....a nice cartwheel can be seen swirling both sides of the coin.

What grade would you assign this coin?

Waiting for the right coin sure was worth it.
That 24-S is just about the nicest I have ever seen.
I once owned an NGC 58 which I thought was a great
coin, but this one beats it hands down !!

    GTG ? ... Okay... MS 64

The luster is a bit weak, but I think the strike is enough to barely bump it to gem level!

    Damn! Nice coin.

    Rock solid MS64.

  • Amazing strike on that coin! Looks gem, but probably in a 64 holder for luster and a few ticks here and there.

    Nice buff!

From the pics I too would say the luster is slightly lacking and limits the grade to 64, killer strike and surfaces.

I am in the same camp as Coinbuf and Buffnut -- really nice strike for the date but luster seems muted. 64 but could be better if luster is better than image.

    Thanks for sharing!

    MS64

Clean enough for a 65. But could use some more blast. Great looking coin whether 64 or 65.

Like everyone else said - lock 64, shot 65 if the luster is better in hand than in the pics.

VERY NICE! I could see this in a 66 holder and not question it at all.

One of the nicest I've seen when strike and die state are considered. Just misses full strike status. An amazing coin IMO.

Something I just noticed on the rev is a sm raised line in the field under the bison's head. It looks very much(just smaller) like the die break line on the 1930 I posted asking about. Is this a common area for die breaks for the buffalo series?

No, it is not an area where die breaks are found. In fact I don't recall ever seeing a die break below the Buffalo's head. What you see is likely a scratch on the die if indeed it's raised metal. Otherwise, I think it's a toning streak.

I'm on 64, not so much because I think it's limited there but because this date's value rises so fast from 64 to 65 and the TPGs tend to be afraid of fully rewarding condition rarities. But if the luster is all there and the picture isn't hiding a trace of rub, I have to think 64 all day. I've had 65s of common dates that weren't this nice.

Nice, congrats! Possibly just weak on the luster? Looks like a great find.

Thanks it sure looks like a raised line to me and its not a toning streak as its the same color as the field on my screen, straight down from the bison's mouth 3/4 of the way to the plain.

Should push MS64. The surfaces sure look nice but it will come down to how original it appears in-hand. Good luck. It's a heckuva nice piece.

    Randy,
Much nicer image although my guess is still the same. Still looks to need more luster to be 65 but is a great strike for a 64. If you have access to CoinFacts, look at the 65s and the first 64 -- your luster is more consistent with the 64 but strike is more like the 65s.

Okay, what's the grade already? image

I grade that coin an extremely nice MS63+/MS64. One of the better one's I've seen. Great coin.

Nice early die state, great strike and wonderful eye appeal for the date. I'm in the 64 camp.

The new pics would bring my orig guess from 64 (possible 65) down to just a real nice 64. The luster looks ok but not really strong. Seems to be some light lines
going across the buffalo from left to right. A few tiny wipe lines could easily drop it from 65 to 64.

I still believe because of the strike .... this coin belongs in at least a 65 holder. The coin needs a bath as there appears to be underlining luster under the haze.

I think there's a reason that coin is still in the OGH, but I hope you can get the upgrade someday.
