A VF/EF Set of all five(5) 1814 Bust Dime die marriages

As I continue to build and grow my 123 coin Capped Bust Dime die marriage collection, acquiring the earlier dates with
enough remaining detail, quality strikes, and original color is a difficult and patient task. While the first two dates, 1809
and 1811, will almost always be tough for any collector, due to both their small mintages and high cost of acquisition,
1814 is also a tougher date to locate with an original, problem-free appearance in VF/EF condition.

I was a little disappointed to learn that my good numismatic friend Dimeman was foregoing an effort to collect his Bust Dimes
by die marriage and instead focus on just the major varieties. But, that also gave me a great buying opportunity because
he gave me first crack at acquiring several of his Bust Dimes. While I couldn't buy everything I wanted from Jon, I picked
up as many pieces which would enhance my collection most critically, and one of those areas was being able to complete
my 1814 die marriages in VF/EF condition; although more appropriately VF-30 to EF-45.

This was an exciting moment for my collection and I would like to publically than Jon again for allowing me to acquire several
wonderful coins to my collection. I know that Jon put that money to good use and is adding another great Bust Dime to his
collection in the near future.

    Congratulations!

I know from my half cent die variety collecting days what a thrill it is to complete a variety set from a given year.

    Awesome
  • That's a very cool set! I do have a question. It appears to my untrained eyes (I know absolutely nothing about bust dimes) that the JR-1 is in better condition, wear-wise, than the other coins graded the same or higher. Is this due to strike differences between different die marriages? Was the coin possibly net graded for the tiny scratches on the cheek/field?

Ha ha, dang it! I was thinking 2 but it came out 9. But hey find a curl 9, that would be cool.
