Is it time for modern forum software?

Why are we still living with 1990's code?
If you agree, what can we do to make it happen?
Do you have concerns? Accessing archives? Maintaining post count?
Would you be willing to contribute a nominal payment to make it happen? Or does that offend you?
Lance.

As for financial help, I already make "nominal payments" to our hosts on a regular (monthly) basis. It's their forum and they can do whatever they want with it. It would be hard to overstate the effect this forum has had on my collecting though. Without it, I'd probably have many, many fewer coins in PCGS holders, and I certainly wouldn't be a subscriber to CoinFacts.

A lot of other forums seem slower and have a busier UI.
What software do you like Lance?
just make sure it has a great universal search feature and post reply notification!
.
of information, threads and other information could be lost.
At least the search function and other features semi work.
I changed my software and as careful as the web guy's were with backups and everything, we still lost a good amount of images and content

I'm guess I'm comfortable with the forum software as well. I also have Foghat playing in my 8 track so I may not be the best judge of these things. MJ

<< <i>I would love to see new software. It's my biggest gripe on here. Especially the search. Also alot of needless clicking. New boards have quick replies and the code to post links and such it the traditional way, it isn't here. >>
They truly do not care. In 2007 a serious security flaw was reported by IBM about this forum's software,
Here
I tried to contact CarolJ by phone, only to be told that she does not take phone calls regarding disputes between message
board members. Ignore the other person and send her a PM if they violate board rules. I called back and asked for someone
in the IT department....long pause..."is that International Trade? There is a list of the foreign coins we slab on our website."
No, it means INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY and there is a serious security flaw on the message board.. I was put on hold
for about 5 minutes..the same girl asked me if I had anti virus software on MY computer. TOTALLY CLUELESS,
I tracked down that E-Zone Media had actually gone out of business, but the product line had been taken up by a Canadian
company who was using the name Fusetalk Inc. They agreed to provide PCGS with a free patch and free phone support for
installing it. ( Normally I would charge $150 an hour for this type of multi party negotiation, and it would have been well worth
it, since PCGS would not have to pay $8000 to $10,000 for the full current version.
Weeks and months passed, and the "Copyright © 1999-2002 e-Zone Media Inc." at the bottom never changed to "Copyright © 1999-2007 Fusetalk Inc." which woulld indicate the patch has been installed. I sent a PM to CarolJ asking if they had gotten the software update and the letter from the vendor explaining why they REALLY REALLY need to install this patch RIGHT AWAY.
Her reply: Thanks for your concern, but I think we are just going to leave it as-is. If I messed something up, David would be FURIOUS!!
And 5 more years have passed... still looks like the unpatched
In God We Trust.... all others pay in Gold and Silver!

...i'd be very satisfied if the "preview" function was fixed.
Commems and Early Type
Would you prefer they bundle membership with CoinFacts and upgraded the software or just leave well enough alone?
<< <i>I guess I am in the camp of "it is ain't broke, don't fix it". >>
I concur.

<< <i>Were do the replies of it's not broken come from? It's been braking off in pieces for the last year or so.
I use IE on a PC and there have been no functionality issues with this usage.

Do you also still store 50K images on your computer to post on the forum?
And how well does that add on spell checker work I always found the typo after posting when using IE.

<< <i>the present software has some issues with newer browsers but i really like the layout of this forum compared to many other forums i have seen. JMO >>
What coinman420 said. I'm not liking the apparent death of the preview function and some other issues I've had with newer browsers, but overall I like the format here more than most of the other sites I've visited. Of course that is largely due to a decade of familiarity.
I'm sure our sponsors have bigger fish to fry, but perhaps one day there will be some kind of patch or update to address some of the issues without completely scrapping the boards. I would hate to something like that happen. Practically all of my numismatic life (in other words, an embarrassingly hefty chunk of my life in general) has been spent here in the last 11 years.
PS- as to the question of a nominal payment- I would not be personally averse to the idea- it might be worth oh, say ten, fifteen, maybe twenty bucks a year to me personally for the continued privilege of forum use, BUT that could have a dangerous side-effect. Impose such a condition and a sizeable chunk of your membership will pull up stakes and walk- and there goes your traffic. When the place becomes sleepier, more members will get bored and jump ship. It would probably never kill the forums completely and a solid core of loyalists would remain, but the place would never be the same.

Lance - it was updated last year. You must be logged onto a Chinese counterfeit of the site.

Oh, drat. Maybe it's my browser, but my Upload Box doesn't seem to be working.
(The pictures themselves still work, but I have to go into the Upload Box to find the URLs for them, unless somebody knows a better way.)
Oh yeah- Advanced Search seems to have also fallen by the wayside.
I had to move over to Chrome for my browser, because the version of IE I had crashed constantly. Even Firefox gave me problems. After I installed Chrome, it was like a new computer, almost. Except for here.
Tried to add a image inside of a link and now it throws an error when I try open my profile to update. Oh well...
