Some good deals out there on graded sets. MCM set the bar but also Silvertown just put up PCGS and NGC sets at great prices. I think the PCGS 70 sets are already gone.

Is it unusual to have a PROOF SAE (from one of these two coin sets) to have a struck-thru with the item still embedded in the surface of the coin?
I looked at one of my sets last evening, saw a struck-thru line curling around on the obverse, then noticed that there was a thin greenish item sticking up out of it (looks like very thin wire, but I'm not sure).
I had to look at it for about 5 minutes from a number of different angles to be certain of what I was seeing.
I don't yet have a pic, and I'm not sure I can get a decent one through the capsule. If I can, I'll certainly post it.
Quite frankly pinpoint luster breaks as struck should not prevent a "70" but I think they might in any case. IMO this is still a subjective process and I think it has been some years now that a study of major TPGs consistency on moderns was tested re: 69 and 70 grades. 69s did not often resubmit grade as 70s but 70s did not resubmit grade at 70 very well either. Also IMO there should not be huge price spreads between the two grades and definitely the premiums for First Strike or Early Release are even more ridiculous.
I'm happy with my set and that I gave as a gift and will not submit.
Love that Milled British (1830-1960) Well, just Love coins, period.
True collectors ... it's real simple ... dump the 70's with frost breaks, etc. and build your collection with the near perfect to perfect examples. Just ask a modern dealer if he will take the time to "cherry" you these special coins which do exist (even for a small added fee) and if you are unable to achieve that goal, then you are going to have to do it yourself (i.e. submit). Or, realize that your goal of near perfect to perfect 70 examples (especially ultra modern MS silver eagles) is not reasonably possible without the likely added expense of buying many rejects in the process and either accept the reality or collect something else.
This also goes for the platinum and gold coins.
Just my 2 cents.

A coin graded "70" should be perfect in my opinion. There should be no frost breaks,;there should be no forgiveness in the minting process. Why do coins need to be graded 70 anyway? Maybe there isnt a single perfect coin in the batch Wouldnt that make the truely perfect coin that appears once in a blue moon, a holy grail of sorts? I think we've gotten way, way out of hand with perfect grades. Especially when we are now asked to subdivide the "70" grade into different levels of quality. Perfection (if it exists) should be just that, perfect.

Well then it's simple there should be no 70s. At some level there is no perfect coin even for a modern.
My two sets arrived Friday afternoon while I was away. Just got home and will be looking at them this evening. Not sure what I am going to do with them. I like that Twobitcollector did what I don't have the nerve to do. That is truly the sign of a true collector. I thought that I was a collector because I don't send my coins out to be graded.
I finally had a chance to look at these coins and am really impressed with the coins - saw no defects, no fingerprints, and no glove threads left behind by mint employees. In otherwords I am very happy with this acquisition and would be interested if someone found an error coin
The "Making American History Coin & Currency Set" containing a 2012-S regular proof Silver Eagle and a $5 bill is due to be released tomorrow.
Will the coin from this set qualify for a separate label, and will it also be First Strike eligible if delivered before the close of the 30-day window for the 2-coin set?
<< <i>The "Making American History Coin & Currency Set" containing a 2012-S regular proof Silver Eagle and a $5 bill is due to be released tomorrow >>
I thought the two coins, the S Mint Proof and the Reverse Proof were only available in the 2 coin sets? If the regular proof is part of the C&C set then that makes the set only half as attractive to me.
The quality on the RP is horrible--at least with my sets. I'm getting less than 10% with a shot at 70. Does anyone know for certain that the Mint will replace returns? I have a few RPs that could go 64 or 65!!! Sorry, no pics yet.
<< <i>Is there any way to track my return/replacement coins back to me? >>
You ship them back (including all packaging) and they will either refund your money or send you a replacement. If you get a replacement they will notify you when it is shipped just like any other order...
Can't imagine you would get a replacement with these being sold out and backorders through October. As far as a return, if you sent them with tracking, you can see when they were delivered. Once they have checked them in and issued credit, they will send you an email. It can take a few days for the credit to show up on your card. No shipping is refunded.
<< <i>Same - still showing 10/31 back ordered...not sure what FS date is, but these won't make it. >>
Isn't it a bit strange that it has been nearly 2 weeks since these started to ship and there is still no FS cut off date listed?? I would think it would not be too complicated a task to let collectors know....
Edited to add: Sorry...I just noticed this thread is about the proof....I meant the set
<< <i>Is there any way to track my return/replacement coins back to me? >>
You may get your replacement - somebody on the mint blog website commented that they are getting one and submitted their return shipping for reimbursment. Wouldn't hurt to call and ask them about it. I'd like to know why they are sending out replacements before all original orders have been shipped. Maybe I'll just go ahead and cancel the sets since I have some 70 sets coming from a dealer at a very good price.
Mine arrived today. I will be calling to verify if I have to leave them sealed or can open them and see if they are worth sending. And a little acetone bath to head off milk spots. They arrived sooner than the estimate of August 16th which I can't complain about. But I'm not happy with the mints choice of such a slow shipping method with out a 1st Class Mail option. I received a letter sent on August 6th with a coin inclosed from North Carolina. It arrived yesterday, August 10th. Just 4 days cross country about as far as it could travel. Follow the journey of the "S" set: As you can see it spent more time between California and Maui than the entire time the North Carolina letter was in transit. I sure hope the mint wakes up and thinks about customer service and innovative products rather than limited shipping options and repackaging of coins already issued.
<< <i>So what's up with MCM, they not doing PCGS sets ? >>
We have a limited number that have come in and a few more on the way. These will be offered to those on our request list and PCGS forum members that call tomorrow while the supply lasts. We are aware that at least one retailer sold sets at VERY cheap prices, but they are sold out. EBay seems to be north of $400 for 70 FS sets so we will be about 5-10% under that until the initial supply runs out.
