Sadly, many really desirable U.S. coins sell for a lot more than $500 these days. image

It pretty much takes the smaller collectors out of the picture.
Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

Zero. I do have one $500+ coin in NGC plastic. It's an ancient, though, so obviously PCGS wouldn't slab that.

I agree, but isn't having "really desirable" coins sell for more a sign of a healthy coin market?

<< <i>It pretty much takes the smaller collectors out of the picture. >>

I'm not sure it drives them out of the picture as much as it may help them focus using collecting strategies like the Box of 20.

14 out of 19 coins in my set are PCGS and they all cost well over $500.

There's something to collect at every price point. If you lose track of that, then you risk being out of touch with a lot of future collectors.

This is not an accurate poll as the price guide is not accurate.... I got one listed at $5,000 I could never get a $1,000 for. so take the numbers with a grain of salt.

While I agree there's something to collect at every price point, the first part of Bill's post which this references specifically says "really desirable U.S. coins" and I do think it is difficult to find "really desirable" US coins under $500.

The polling results seem to indicate the choices should have gone up a ways beyond 100 PCGS coins over $500 owned.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
