Coin Collectors: If You woke up tomorrow and ALL Morgans had completely vanished. . .

braddickbraddick Posts: 24,811 ✭✭✭✭✭
Would you be sad or ecstatic?

Would you dump the hobby or, without blinking an eye, be relieved you never have to see another again?

Edited: Spelling!

It would be very weird but I suppose I could live with it. I like them and all but they're not my #1.

Could you imagine some dealer's cases at shows with no more morgans! Would be interesting to say the least. I'm not a morgan collector, but who doesn't like big silver coins!

I would be sad if all my Morgan dollars vanished. Unless they were all replaced with Capped bust halves. Morgan who?

If silver ever gets to 500 bucks an ounce like some think, you will see just that, and I will be happy selling 'almost' every one of them.

I'd file an insurance claim. Then maybe I'd collect Swiss Shooting Thalers (obscure inside VAM guy joke).

I've wondered what it would be like if all the morgans in the bank hoards had been melted. What would it be like...how popular would the series be today? I think it would be about as popular as the barber series are.

I really would not mind getting them mailed out, no longer collecting them just find a deal I can't pass up every once in awhile.

an industry would not have been born , if not for those particular coins. I sold a coin at spot to a young man the other day. He came back a few days later , excited about vamthing or another.

I think they are attractive coins and I have several that I bought years ago but don't collect them anymore cause I thought they were just to common.I guess I would miss the ones I have but just a little.

It would make finding nicer type coins and Lincolns a lot easier, as there are a lot of dealers with a lot of dreck Morgans spread out amongst all of the small shows across our great land....
  • LVGTLVGT Posts: 503
I just started collecting Morgans a few months ago and I am really having fun with it. I started out collecting bust halves and still do, but Morgans are a nice fix for color and high MS coins at a reasonable cost. CBH's can be pricey.

To be honest, it might be months until I noticed. It would only become apparent to me when I next attended a coin show or if I happened to open my 7070 and see the empty hole.

I can't hold out... some of the coins in my next submission:

    1) 1880 CC, 1881 CC (2), 1885 CC, 1886 S, 1903 S, (higher tier , REG fee: $30 for coins valued over $300)
    2) 1881 O, 1881 S, 1884 O, 1891 S, 1901 O, 1901 S, 1904, (economy fee: $18 for coins valued under $300)
    3) 1884 S, (Secure Plus $50, for coins that need a badge, maybe a sticker, value at $1000 + )

If they completely vanished, I'd be collecting from the USPS, and be disappointed in "the system".
The only other order in the submission was a statehood modern quarter weighing in at 3.1 grams that has no cupro nickel attached to what appears to be a pure copper core, without porosity or signs of chemical use, in my opinion. (that cost $50 for "mint error" and what is the value ? )

In the meantime, if I wake up tomorrow... I'll be thankful, like today... Mostly that there are experts to oversee the coins that matter to me.

As much as I enjoy Morgan dollars and have them as an integral part of my collection, I could easily continue to enjoy Morgan's work in other areas. He created some of the finest numismatic art in Patterns, Assay Commission medals, and other medallic issues. What, me worry? image

Since I own none I would not notice unless I logged into the Coin Forum.

Overall I would be concerned. Former Morgan collectors might start buying obscure low pop 19th Century gold. image

I would definitely miss my Morgan dollars.

Morgans add a lot to the hobby not really provided by other coins.

Morgan toners and DMPLs would be missed for sure.

I'm sure lower-priced century-old MS dollars would be missed by many as well.

  • ConstantineConstantine Posts: 2,369 ✭✭✭
I certainly would miss them. I view Morgans as the benchmark of the hobby. Even for those that do not collect them, they make a solid foundation for the hobby from those that do.

If they all vanished, then I would just have to up the price of what I had and sell them. lol
  • I would just hire the Chinese to make me up a nice complete set!

    all the Morgans vanished?
    I'd lose a couple rolls.

I'd immediately sell all my coins. Why are coins suddenly "vanishing"???

This. I have an 1884 CC in PC 6 which was cracked out from when I got it from the GSA Sale of 1980. The only reason I have it is because it is part of my 19th - Early 20th Century Type Set. I'm not going to rag on anyone who collects Morgan $s, but the fact of the matter, is that the design does nothing for me. I'll take Seated, Capped Bust or Draped Bust coinage over the Morgan $ any day.

I'll go one further, and possibly insult most everyone reading this thread. I'll take my attractive 05 O Barber Half (it's in a PC 5 holder; there are attractive Barber Halves, but you have to look for quite awhile to find one) over any Morgan out there.
