was once a necessary effort to combat shaving bits of precious metals off the edges of coins. edge lettering was also used in the effort.
I guess with PM coins still being made, it is still a necessary effort.

Please only remember my opening Sig Line.In the old days (and now also I guess), if the reeding or edge lettering was missing someone ground or shaved the edges trying to accumulate precious metal shavings. Do this with a few hundred coins and you'd have a good bit of gold or silver back when it was worth it to try to get away with it.
