Did you ever wonder why some coins have " ridges " and some don't? Even coins in other countries. It just makes you go image

    reeding

was once a necessary effort to combat shaving bits of precious metals off the edges of coins. edge lettering was also used in the effort.

I guess with PM coins still being made, it is still a necessary effort.

My understanding is it has remained on clad coinage as tradition. Notice that the only coins with smooth edges are those that were never made in a precious metal (not counting war nickels, of course).

In the old days (and now also I guess), if the reeding or edge lettering was missing someone ground or shaved the edges trying to accumulate precious metal shavings. Do this with a few hundred coins and you'd have a good bit of gold or silver back when it was worth it to try to get away with it.

So, as a trivia question (that I don't know the answer to), what was the first reeded coin? (US or world)?

The 20 cent piece was also without reeding.

Are there any other US Gold or silver coins that did not have reeded or a lettered edge?
