Picked Up This 1942 Proof Walker, Looks Cameo to me...

Just pulled the trigger on this 1942 NGC PR67 CAC Walker from the Legend website. To me it looks about as Cameo as you can get; not sure why it didn't get the designation.
Perhaps it's just a good photograph, but even a tricky photo couldn't make contrast this nice. Almost looks DMPL. What do you guys think?

It should arrive next week some time, and I'll post my own own (meager) pic.

Here's the link to the Legend archives, as I'm not sure if I should try to take their picture:

Thanks for looking

no issue i can see here
that's a sweet example regardless of what any plastic has to term it to be...image
most likely as fade to black says
sun= a device and no frost
    mirrors look strong enough

I am not sure NGC is the same, but PCGS requires that the sun also be frosted. And it much pretty never is.

    PS. Nice coin!

It's a beauty for sure. It's close to cameo but no cigar. Besides, they just don't give out that designation anymore (PCGS or NGC). I'm guessing between the two services they are about 20- 25 such designated coins. Ironically the four I have seen in hand did not meet the cameo criteria imo. Skyman owns a designated cameo which I have not seen in hand but from the pictures and others accounts it is a cameo and a beast.

I'd heard about the sun criteria, but I thought this one was so pretty it didn't matter to me. And you're right, the few that are in the Heritage archives don't look any better than this one.
But there's no substitute for the human eye, especially when looking at Cameos.

Skyman's coin is a beast for sure.

  • I've seen Skyman's coin in hand, a true cameo. This coin is awesome! Very nice. I've only seen one coin where the sun is frosted. On several others I have seen more frost on the eagle's wings, the rock it stands on and Liberty's robe by her trailing foot.

To me this coin certainly deserves a premium for its beauty but I'm not so sure it deserves the cameo designation. If Walkers were graded cameo by a different scale than other types it would get the designation because there are so few Walkers with any frost at all. But if it is compared to Franklins it would not.

No, not officially a cameo, but would you rather pay CAM money for one barely makes it or a more modest premium for one that barely misses? Really nice coin!

My old eyes aren't so good anymore...but the photo shows a spectacular coin, fer sure. On cameos, I have to have the coin in hand to really make an accurate determination.
