Cryptic message on a Lincoln Cent

savoyspecialsavoyspecial Posts: 7,310 ✭✭✭✭
I don't have any pictures, but recently I was shown a 1918 Lincoln Cent with a crudely engraved message (covered by years of patina) -- required a 10x loupe to read:

10:35 AM TUES 10-14-57
SANFORD AVE
IN STREET NEAR
S.O: AVE

Any ideas?

My guess is it's a record of when the person found the cent.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

    Those are called, "Virginity Cents"
It was popular back in the mid to late 50's for boys to carve in the details of when and where they lost their virginity.

    Edited to add:
The fad died a fairly quick death right about the same time poodle skirts ceased to be popular.

So the kid lost his virginity in the street near S.O. AVE. at 10:35 AM?

    Wow.

    Somehow, I doubt it.

    Me too.
Kids were known to fib about their virginity status back in the day.

  • That's why none of my coins have stuff like that on them because i'm still a virgin (NOT)

Greg is not that kind of person. He IS the counterstamp expert on the forum.

Whoever did it must have been pretty clueless to get the day of the week wrong, though.
