Cryptic message on a Lincoln Cent

I don't have any pictures, but recently I was shown a 1918 Lincoln Cent with a crudely engraved message (covered by years of patina) -- required a 10x loupe to read:

SANFORD AVE
IN STREET NEAR
S.O: AVE
Any ideas?
