When was the last time you`ve ever received one of these in change?

That's where my silver certificate went! image

I have never received "unusual" paper notes in change or from the bank.

Nifty! Silly question, but can one still trade it in for silver? I'm guessing no but doesn't hurt to ask.

Not often but I did find they are still worth a dollar!

    Sadly, nothing more.

Cool find but No offense buddy , but if you took that in to a coin dealer he'll laugh at you. From exp. Even very excellent condition these are not favorable anymore. Still a rare find in circulation today! One would think these would be really worth something but their not. What a shame.

ALWAYS cool to find something obsolete in circulation, obviously you can't retire on the proceeds, and no one wants to buy it, but it will be tough to spend again... so, actually, in a sense, you've LOST a dollar, haven't you?

Got one about a year and a half ago..... was quite 'used'...figured someone found it tucked away and spent it. Not worth anything, and cannot get silver for them anymore. Cheers, RickO

Very cool find in "change". In the 80s I found a 1909 VDB Cent that was really nice but never one of those!

  • I remember the frenzy when the ability to trade these for silver was ended. There was a fellow in NYC dubbed Silverfinger. He bought these bills at a discount and then traded them in for silver which he promptly sold. He made a ton of money by saving regular folk the bother of trading them in and then selling the silver.

I got more $2 bills than silver certs. Haven't seen one in "change" for years and years.

Had a call from Darrell, my neighbor a week or so ago. Said he had some paper money he
    wanted to sell.

Well, I showed up and he had $400 in one dollar silver certs, about a grand in $5 red seals,
and an equal amount in $10s and $20s. All heavily circulated. Advised him to look for errors
and mismatched or radar numbers, etc. Told him I would not buy them for over face as they
just don't have a market anymore. He was very disappointed and his wife walked out of the
    room. Oh well.

So, get a call last night that he took it all to Sahara Coins, here in Vegas, and they bought
one $5 bill and would not buy the rest. He got $10 for the one five and brought the rest home
and called me wanting to know what to do with them. I did not have an answer other than
leave them to your daughter and someday they may be worth more than face.
