Really Useful Boxes + another reason PCGS > other TPGs ;)

Came across these little pencil boxes called "Really Useful Boxes" at a Staples store here in Canada. They're made in the UK and come in various sizes. Picked these two up today after bringing some various slabs to see which size would work best.

I ended up getting one 0.9L ($6) and one 0.7L ($4). The 0.9L box fits three PCGS slabs perfectly when laid flat, and you can stack them 6 high and still snap/lock the lid on, or 7 tall with the lid not quite fitting.

The NGC slabs were slightly too tall for this box, so I had to get the 0.55L box for them and stack sideways. In this 0.7L box you can fit 12 PCGS slabs when they are laid sideways (along their edge). I prefer laying my slabs flat in the larger box. Here's some pics.

Those look like a good idea. I just started using sports card "Set Boxes". Good strong cardboard
and in different sizes for lots of storage and sorting out by series and cheap as heck, 40 to 50 cent per.

Only problem is that storing slabs in contact with each other you end up with a whole lot of slabs with scratched lens and you can't see the coins. Not as compact but I have found the TPG storage boxes protect the slabs better.

not a fan of the box, but I'm a fan of your coins image IMO, if you have to stack them on top of each other, at least place them individually into a zip lock bag. This way, not only the coin, but even the slab will stay pretty and scratchless.

Cool find. That's an interesting fit.

I'm still a fan of the compact size, sturdiness and stackability of ICG slabs. Of course, you can't have everything so I have to live without them most of the time.

Probably a good idea. I do hate scratched up slabs! I might just do a layer of bubble wrap in between each layer of coins instead of individual bags.

These boxes are not made with PVC, are they?

I would also make sure there is no PVC in them. I have some similar and they do give off a "plastic" odor.

Much better than individual zip lock bags are these baseball card sleeves which fit PCGS and NGC slabs perfectly.

I protect all my slabs with these, especially after polishing them. And I return customer coins in them this way as well.

I hadn't even thought of that. I definitely don't want to pvc gas my coins. There isn't a strong plastic odor, but I'll email them through their site and see what they say.

I see on their website they list "food storage & transport" as one of the uses, which means there shouldn't be any PVC in them. As far as I know, PVC isn't allowed to be used for any food storage plastic bags/bins/etc.

Got a quick response from their email support:

"All our products are made from poly propylene and contain no PVC."

I'm not sure how good polypropylene boxes are for slabbed coins, but polypropylene bags are generally known to be bad for comics. The bags breakdown chemically and damage the comics.

Agreed, but it's nice to have a medium sized temporary storage box, even if it is only to move coins to and from said bank box image

In theory this sounds like a good idea but I'm thinking that "stacked" slabs aren't the problem. The problem is side by side slabs which can easily, if the box is bumped, slid on top of each other. Bubble wrap between the layers will not prevent this problem.

With the PCGS Blue Boxes, you literally have to drop the entire box with the slabs spilling out onto the Bank Vault Floor (oops!) before serious scratching will occur.

Folks should be aware that PVC is used to "soften plastic" and is usually not present in rigid plastic containers. The plastic "smell" associated with PVC is the same smell that a new shower curtain gives off. Inflatable water devices give off the same odor.

As do coin shows. That smell when you walk into any decent sized bourse is PVC.

I bought the same boxes for a short term storage of my silver bars. One size (I don't recall which one) fits perfectly 4 half kilo bars!

Speaking of boxes for slab, imo, Withman's are the best. PCGS and NGC leave the slab a little room.
