Where do MS66 Saints come from?

Not counting the Wells Fargo hoard, when you see an accurately graded MS66 Saint today, what do you believe the coin's history to be?

1. Obtained directly from a cashier at the mint or from a fresh roll at the bank and put away for the past ~100 years by a collector (and his descendants)

2. One that was likely an old birthday or wedding gift given fresh in 1928 until emerging untouched from a safe deposit box 50+ years later

3. From a hoard of MS66's? (a la Wells Fargo)

4. One that’s been on the "coin circuit" for generations

5. One plucked relatively recently--somehow unscathed--from bags of gold shipped to Europe

Considering how soft the metal is, the large size of the coin, and how many years it has been since these were produced...I really wonder how so many of these remained so nice. Where do most of them come from—or are there dozens of answers?

Europe, in all probabiliy,
but not just recently;

$20's have been imported
from Europe in high grades
since the early '70's..........

Mostly from Europe and stored securely in rolls.

As already stated, hoards that were shipped back from overseas.

Good thing you specified "accurately" graded MS66 saints. Otherwise my answer would have been: from the previously existing pool of accurately graded MS65 saints.

I read somewhere that quite a few came from bank hoards in South America.

There was one huge South America
Hoard that was handled by MTB in NY.

Other amounts have come out of SA,
but not in that kind of large quantity.

I remember back in 1976 buying, thru
a Bank in Zurich, 500 1875 $20 Libs,
all BU to CH BU - had 'em shipped directly
to NY (it was just before the ANA there),
and sold 'em at my table (Numismatics, Ltd.)
They went like hotcakes......they were
fresh and crisp....

Maybe it's time to seek a tuition refund....or take No-Doz before class.

Back to the subject: I agree that the vast majority of MS66 Saints available today spent many years in Europe, going there in the early 1930's as the European banking system experienced its own financial problems.

In the early 1980s while in Spier, Germany a bank there had rolls of gem Morgan and Saints. Several banks I visited in Germany had them, but the one in Spier was the one I purchased from. They were selling them individually or by the roll. Unfortunately, as a young soldier, I only had money to purchase Morgans. This, to me, confirmed the stories I had heard growing up about coins being shipped to Europe earlier.

They get all their's from the bean factory. The % of beaned MS66 saints is quite small. It might be one of the very toughest coins/grade to get beaned.

I have been trying to accumulate as many MS-66 Saints as I could afford over the past 11 years and have been fortunate to get about 30% of them stickered and then horse traded the others into ones that were good enough to sticker. Now, all of my MS-66 Saints are stickered.

I did much better in getting my $20 Libs stickered whether circulated or mint state and got over 80% of them stickered and did the same thing; horse trading the 20% into ones that were good enough to sticker.

Interestingly, I was able to get PCGS and NGC to remove putty and/or PVC on a few of the
the misc old ones and most of them were good enough to reslab at the same grade and then sticker.

My impression is that high quality MS-66 Saints are located in many hands everywhere.
