An 1861-O NEWP added to the Date Collection

UPDATE : 09/09/12:

Newp for the Date Set - 1861-O Half

Just picked this up at the Heritage live auction last night.

Maybe not as flashy as the rest of the collection - but this one is unattributed - and cost was within the budget - if a nicer AU
eventually shows up - I might upgrade then... but for now ... this is working just fine for me.

I usually don't like seated coins that are white as they usually looked dipped out - but that half looks fresh and very appealing. And the 1861 cent is a tougher coin in Unc than many likely realize. Nice stuff Mike!

I agree re: the 1861 cent. It took me a while to find an MS-63. A few weeks ago, Rick Snow had a 64 on his website as a newp, and it sold instantly.

Interesting die breaks on the reverse, especially the eagles wing. Large Mint Mark variety WB-101. The wiley and Bugert book says ,that, "One of these tail dies is noted for a drastically shattered die state." Maybe an early die state?

I have an 1861-S graded AU50/AU50 ANACS old photo cert myself. Which looks way undergraded. Like the year and date.

Hi Mike and congrats on acquiring the 1861-O half. I had put in a bid in Heritage live but you obviously outbid me.

I liked the coin a lot, enough to bid on it, so I know you will like it too! Looks original to me!

  • Nice 1861-O half. Are you going to try to add an 1861-O CSA as well? I love that issue.

That 1861-S is AMAZING! I managed to snag an 1861-O at a Long Beach show years ago. For some reason that date popped into my mind for that show, and I found a nice one withing minutes. I wonder how scarce nice circulated 61-O's are as compared to the othe 1960's dates?

PCGS AU-58 (luster is better in had, 3 lights hilights the coin, but mutes the luster somewhat):

    My current 61-O is a PCGS AU-58:

But I have this one on the way as a likely upgrade (63):
