Numismatic peculiarities...what's yours?

I only like Morgan Dollars that are blast white. Keep the rainbows in fairyland and the toners on the beach. But, I dislike any other US coin that is white. Any other type of US coin(pre 64) has to have toning for me to like it. What's up with that?

I don't like any coin that has a mark or a spot or a ding or a dent or a scratch or a hairline on the nose ... Lincoln's nose, an eagle's nose, Liberty's nose, etc.

I hate coins used for jewelry, such as rings, belt buckles, key chains, tie tacks, buttons, bracelets, etc.

This has more to do with coin publishing books. I never could understand why Redbook ( many other books as well, i don't only want to pick on R.B. ) comes out with a " new " book every year? When in reality, every price stays the same, just about.

I detest the ridiculous premium of shipwreck-recovered coins. Salt water corrosion really turns me off.

I hate debris trapped in the holder and it really drives me crazy if it's sitting on the coin where a simple blast of dust off would solve the problem.

Did you at least get the Seated Liberty you were looking for? Let me know when you graduate to Morgans,or buy another shop because you were looking for a Morgan.

I won't buy a VG08 Morgan if it doesn't have complete rims on both sides, an F12 if most of the lines aren't visible inside the cotton bolls, or an XF40 if it doesn't have fully separated feathers inside the eagle's right wing (viewer's left). All of these seem to be dieing out as requirements for those grades at all TPGs.

I refuse to purchase a coin that falls below the following minimum level of preservation:

A coin for the budget-conscious collector. The piece has original surfaces, save for an old cleaning and polishing. For accuracy's sake, we note that the reeded edge has been expertly re-engraved, leading us to suspect that a jewelry loop was once attached. We also feel that the piece may have been sweated, as it is ever so slightly underweight and both sides are peppered with contact marks. Although the piece was probably dipped at one time, it is now beginning to retone in quite attractive hues. The surfaces have been expertly smoothed to minimize all but the heaviest gouges, although a few rim dings are still visible, which serve for identification purposes. The coin has a slightly matte appearance, possibly due to the effects of seawater immersion. The coin should be examined in person, as it has much more eye appeal than the technical description would suggest.

I prefer circulated over uncirculated, I don't particularly care for Morgans, and I don't care at all about "grade".

I am in the hobby because I love the history, not to make a profit.

I agree with BK here. I really could care less about UNC coins. Give me a VF any day of the week over an MS coin.

Interesting......I don't like fingerprints, muted luster, dip residue, modern clad coinage, ga-ga grades (ie above MS 65 for early stuff and above MS 67 for later stuff), soft stikes and bullion coins (ASEs, etc, I want REAL history).

I did not mean just ex-jewelry-I also hate ones that are currently used as jewelry or anything that they were not minted to be used for. I hate imitation coins used for jewelry as well.

Let me add that I am VERY particular about SLABS. Even though a coin is in a slab......don't grab it by the center and run your greasy fingers across the surface!! Hold it by the EDGES. Some people just don't know how to handle coins. Even though they are in slabs, you should still treat them with respect!!

I will prefer a dirty 1936 Walker 50C in crusty strong XF from the bottom of some box of junk I KNOW no one has touched since to a white MS63 in any slab.
I think some circ Proofs are cooler than their brothers.

Agree---especially staple scratches from someone carelessly removing a coin from a 2X2.

I prefer old coins in Good to Fine over high grade coins, because the wear testifies to their authentic history in actual commerce.
I also like when they have "test marks" such as small scratches and digs, and sometimes even contemporary holes and grafitti.

I enjoy receiving an auction lot or some other dealer purchase and opening it with childlike anticipation, then repackaging it complete with the coin and receipt inside taped backed up and then open it up again to try to recapture the initial thrill I had when I first received it. I sometimes sleep with my coins as well.
