Question on whether you would pay extra for a coin/set like this. (Poll)

Assume it is still sealed in a proof set, the only coin with any toning is the Cent and the other coins are as minted.

Assume you know it is NT as well please.

  • I have sent coins into be graded that we're still in Mint packaging and they have been bagged as AT . So with a set like that no because it wouldn't grade and looks AT

they were likely removed from the packaging and put in flips by receiving before anyone with AT/NT authority saw it.

Yes- but no mention of how much extra. I might could sell it as an NT wonder, but I would not pay much extra for toning. That's not me.

In PCGS plastic I'd be a buyer at $100. ++ depending on the grade.
Out of plastic I'd not want to be in it really at all.

Braddick's response shows that there truly is added value in "plastic".

For me, I would not pay a large premium for the cent in an OGP set or in an aftermarket holder set, even with the toning (I may pay a dollar or two more just for the convenience of not having to look further for a similar set available at no premium).

For slabbed examples of these toned cents, I have not yet paid for one [primarily since I prefer to collect raw]. However at a show a couple of years ago I saw a 1963 cent, slabbed by PCGS or NGC in Angel Dee's display case. It was crescent toned and unbelievably gorgeous. It also high grade [67 or higher]. The toning was multi colored shifting from the blazing orange untoned portion of the coin and progressing to a deep bluish/purple at rim. He wanted $150.00 for the coin and I was tempted to buy it simply because the color was so amazing and because it was slabbed by a top flight TPG.

The results of a poll like this on this forum are always skewed by those of us who just don't collect this type of coin, regardless of the toning.

That at its core means the poll isn't skewed.

Exactly. The truth go the matter is that this coin will sell for a premium, regardless of the opinions you read here. Members want to be viewed as having an independent mind that do not follow the crown. So, this poll cannot be viewed as a true reflection of the coin.

Even if you don't collect the series, I have a hard time digesting the notion that when you compare a toned example - assuming it is NT as the hypo stated - to a normal example there would be zero difference in the price.

Pay a premium for a 1961 proof cent? Get serious.

That's my birthyear, so yes I probably would pay a premium over even red

I found the poll to be informative.

Thank you for all the feedback.

The answer depends on your definition of "extra."
