The ole missing hand. The 44-S is a notorious poor strike and this one doesn't disappoint. Good looking just the same. I have a PCGS 66 CAC that also has a missing hand. MJ

These almost always are much, much more noticeable in a photograph (especially a good sharp photograph) than they are in hand. I do however agree with other posters that the grade likely is limited by the strike, and most certainly NOT by the eye appeal, which this coin clearly does have in spades.
I am about 90% certain I have owned/ dealt that coin some time in the past two years.
If I recall the coin is conservatively graded based on the technical merits but are apprehensive about the toning.

With that much toning its difficult to judge if it's undergraded. This year and mm are notorious for weak strike and as was mentioned weak or no hand(thumb)

I've seen the coin in hand and was surprised it didn't grade much higher! I thought maybe even the star designation. Beautiful coin and one I expect to see upgraded!

I've seen a handful of gem 20th century coins that were net graded due to toning. Own one of them myself.
