Why it pays to know your Cherrypickers varieties....

CameonutCameonut Posts: 7,432 ✭✭✭✭✭
First of all - a shout out to LasVegasTeddy for alerting me to this set on Ebay. I figured the cameo half was worth taking a closer look at for a paltry $12 - delivered - so I pulled the BIN trigger.

Well, the set arrived yesterday. The half has dynamite frost on the obverse but a gash on the cheek (not seen on the photo) was disappointing. Also disappointing was the reverse - it was brilliant and had no frost as suggested by the sellers photo. So the half was a definite downer...

But wait, there are several Cherrypickers Guide varieties for 1971 proof sets. Upon closer inspection, the cent is a very nice example of a Doubled Die Obverse - FS-032 to be exact. One of these days it will be on its way to PCGS for certification. For those that don't have a CPG, the value listed in the book for a PF 67 is $750 (not that I expect to get that). What appears to be a scratch on the obverse is on the packaging.

So the $12 cameo gamble turned out to be an unexpected bonanza - probably better than if the half were a deep cameo. Would you have checked the set for varieties?

Here is the sellers photo.

Al, the madness isn't always the "market" , as it is the search. One particular numismatic literary contributor "cherrypicks" every time he comes into my shop. His first question : "Whatdya got new in here ? " It's great to see grown men acting like a kid in a candy store. I love to keep a box of "stuff" for him. He never spends a lot. But the time spent with guys like him gives me "experiences" that I'd never get from someone who only sees the MONEY side of numismatics and not those "other things''.

I too have fallen for this madness of search, BUT I am only searching in my own field that I am collecting, I have recently learned that while trying to help others learn of these varieties it has been a double edge sword, Right after my announcement of finding the second known to be found and top pop 5 others were found here on the board, Now I spent MONTHS searching for an example to add to my own collection to be told by some of those that learned from me they had NO INTEREST in collecting these and would sell as soon as they got them back, Panic set in, Others told me to just sell my example right away (which turned out to be the best idea) But I still struggle with the fact that the coin I found and LOVED was to be sold off. So now I search for another example and learned that sometimes by sharing info it goes to those who only WANT to make a buck and have no interest in that SERIES, I did get lucky with another member selling me a coin that is the third to be found and possibly the top pop I will be quiet this time so that I may enjoy the fruits of my searches. This Coin will NOT BE SOLD by me in my lifetime and will go into MY registry set...........teaching others is fine but to those who look at it as just a score try to think of the others who search for these who Really just want to OWN IT..........Enjoy and Congrats.............tom image

But wouldn't you also say the pop for these varieties keeps gettting bigger with each addtiional discovery, when accounted for the price for these varieties will be forced down....common sense. Thus I would send the 1c in now for variety attribution and sell it quickly so not to lose the height of the market if the market truly pays for such madness. >>

I find the joy in the hunt rather than getting anything graded and flipping.
I have only come across routine varieties however, no big time stuff.
Its kinda like treasure hunting with a metal detector I guess.
Going to find some nice stuff that is satisfying but not the big chest of gold.
I agree with your analysis on increasing finds with resultant decreasing prices.
    Makes sense.
    Best.

First, Great pick you Lucky $%^&*!!!

But all that talk about varieties and increasing pops is true...But so is the interest, the number of books in Reprint, specialty sites like the Lincoln Cent Resource, and now Chuck Daughterys (Coppercoins) Variery attribution service. So yeah more people interested, means more finds. The common stuff pops will bring down the values, while the others will prove to be even scarcer.

Congrats on the lucky find. I gave up trying to cherrypick varieties in proof sets on eBay because nobody uses pictures big enough to attribute. If your seller had used a nice big clear photo, he might have gotten close to that $400 for the set himself.

Congrats! I can't begin to know how many 1971 proof sets I've looked at over the years, trying to find one of those.
