In a real Dismal attitude over the new posters in this contest.

Surprising there are so many first time posters posting on the contest by homerunhall today and I can't even get a friend of mine registered to this forum. No wonder why you all ask me why I'm so dismal... image

They should make a join date rule. I understand getting more membership on one hand, but lets say the contest hit one of those deal sites somewhere? Anyone and their mother is willing to sign up for a shot at a 2k$ item.

The contest was posted by PCGS on facebook, with a link to the forums. That may explain why there are so many new posters. Additionally, don't you think that could have been a motivating factor for the contest, to draw in more forum members and bring attention to PCGS as a company who appreciates it's customers?

But how do so many "new" members get accepted with such ease and I can't even get a respected friend from my local coin club approved?

I honestly don't know, but it sounds like there may be something going on with his registration. You might try sending a PM to Don Willis or another moderator to find out why.

That's odd, didn't see it on their Facebook page when I just looked.

Anyways, welcome to the new members if they really are new members image

Are you suggesting there might be a few alts in this contest?

My mistake, it was Twitter. I sometimes get confused by all this social media mumbo jumbo.

Those that only join to win a coin are unlikely to stick around after the contest ends

Its like state quarter, only 1 in a 1000 (wild guess) will develop into a true numismatist. If we got 1 or 2 quality new members than I think it was worth PCGS's time and money even before factoring the reward to its loyalists. Besides it isn't our money image ....yet?

Have him try it again, now, and see if they are working hard to get people on for the contest.
Also, does he use a "real" email or a hotmail/gmail type of email? That may make a difference in some places (not sure if it does here).

Excellent point. I withdraw my statement. What a dumb contest. MJ

PCGS wanted to promote PCGS, promote their very cool forum, and award/reward someone who comes to their site--I would say they will accomplish each goal. If a newbie wins, its a free contest, I only hope its not someone with 50 alt accounts--but I see a lot of forum members participating--good luck to all, and anytime someone wants to give away a gold coin graded or not, well, Im game

Just pointing out what I see fellas. I might be guilty of being too new, but what I see seems real unscrupulous.

I would say charge $1 by credit card for new memberships (answers a lot of questions...I worry about this new influx and any scammers coming in with the tide).

Even charging a "membership" fee of $1/year to keep your account active would help alleviate the 30,000+ inactive accounts here on the boards!

Well maybe, but I was thinking more like grandfathering in everyone who is already a member...just doing it for new members. On the other hand, if PCGS did do that, it would be a nice gesture for them to put the money back into doing more cool giveaways like the present one image

Everyone was new at one point. I still consider myself a newbie to forum and novice collector. But have had fun, some great transactions, met some fantastic folks and have learned a lot!

That said, if I win the Saint, then I will have a give-away of a > $100.00 coin open to all! My initial thought is it will be based on my 8 year olds pick of coolest aviator. image

Well I think it's a good marketing technique by PCGS. But I also think that if there were anymore coin collectors out there, they already knew of PCGS, knew of the boards here, and either was not interested or booted out in the past.
