I'm sure a phone call to CAC with a request to speak directly to John Albanese about "phony or falsely applied stickers" would quickly result in more clarity than can be gained on this Forum.image

I am the seller on ebay.

The auction was placed up for fun and to put a little humor out there. I did see that the very extensive write up that I made last night somehow got erased and only the first 1 1/2 sentenses remained. I added a little this morning but most of the funny is now gone...

In terms of stickers being able to be peeled; I spoke with John about this and was told that one cannot peel a cac sticker and reapply it on another slab without detection (i.e. anyone who knows what a regular sticker looks like should be able to tell)

Several forum members including jdimmick above have stated they have seen stickers on coins that were not awarded them and had been peeled and replaced. I have not seen any myself but my guess is that if a pcgs slab can be counterfeited what stops somebody from doing the same to a CAC sticker...

In terms of the providence of this gold sticker- it was sitting in a box of hundreds of cracked slabs at a local dealers store. I asked the dealer if I could take it and was told "sure".
As some people collect all different types of pcgs and cac gold things, this slab is EX pcgs so it could be added to somebodies fun collection.

Will somebody buy it and try applying it to another slab? Hopefully not- there are plenty of cheap CAC gold stickers out there and if somebody would like to do something unethical there is no shortage of ways to do something.
may the fonz be with you...always...

Another forum member has stated that when he sends CACd slabs back for reholder that he shaves the CAC label off of the old slab and puts it on to the new one. Whether someone from CAC could examine the slab and affirm the practice is not known.

Good as although it would have been fun to see what just a sticker itself would fetch it could have been used to screw someone.

I disagree---par for the course regarding eBay.

JA is certainly an authority about many things. But I can tell you from first hand experience it is possible to remove a CAC sticker and reapply it and no one could tell the difference.

I have written of this before. I lost a green been during a reholder so I salvaged one from an NGC slab I had cracked. I used a very sharp flat razor and carefully lifted enough of the sticker to peel the rest off with my fingers. There was no tearing, shearing, distortion or other damage.

I did mar the surface of the already-cracked NGC plastic in the process. My concern was just rescuing the bean.

In the case of a reholder, as long as the cert number stays the same, the bean can be reapplied with verification of its status in the database. If the cert number changes, like with a regrade, then the coin must go through the CAC process again.

Looks to me like I need to plug my cert numbers into the CAC verify. I will be super upset if any do not show properly.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

Right, Matt. Cert numbers don't change with a reholder. Regrade, yes.

JA is not an authority on beans. He paid the people who did the technology for the beans and wants to maintain the integrity of his brand.

If you're concerned about anything relating to counterfeiting or fraud and the top man in the organization makes himself available, you are well-leveraged to make that information useful and do a service for the community.

Can you imagine Don Willis NOT returning your call on a questionable slab? JA is the same.

Personally, I'm having a Taco Bell moment.
