A tuff Buff to grade...your thoughts on this 25-s

Crazy4CoinsCrazy4Coins Posts: 1,922 ✭✭✭
Been a while since I chimed in. Hope all is going well for the forum gang.

Thought I would post this Buffalo and get some opinions. This is a tuff coin to find with good luster and strike, and can be tough to grade due to striking issues.

Care to GTG? Currently slabbed as MS64 Imo, the coin deserves at a minimum a plus designation. The only thing I see keeping this coin out of a 65 holder is a little too much die erosion on the reverse and just a tad bit too much weakness on the bison's head. Although there are quite a few with the same appearance currently slabbed as 65's.

Boy, I guess I don't know how to grade Buffs. I would have guessed AU. Looks like high point wear on both sides, especially the rev. on the Buff's hair, shoulder, and leg.
  • AU58 for what looks like rub on the buffalo shoulder top. If thats the slab then 65

    Nice coin-

This is another tough date to grade- I see 64 and that is likely a tad conservative

This is a brutal date for strike. The obverse of your coin is very nice, but I think the reverse would keep it out of a 65 holder. My guess is 64.

For those guessing 66, PCGS has only graded one 25-S as MS66 and that one sits in Gerald Forsythe's set.

By the way, it's great to have another Buffalo poster on here.

That's a gorgeous Buff and a very tough key date/mm, especially in the higher grades.
I'm no expert but I'm going to go with the 64 crowd here. First thought I'll admit was 66 but after reading comments of those more knowledgable, I took it down a notch or two.

It's outta my league! I'd be lucky to find a nice XF/AU for my set on this one.

    Thanks for sharing.

Tough for me to tell between coins that are weakly struck and coins that have rub sometimes...in this case, I am in the AU55/58 camp.

I would guess a medium die state, as the date is becoming mushy--overall an excellent strike for this date.
I would probably guess minimum MS64, but this coin date is hard to grade except by those most familiar with the
coin series. Congrats on a great coin and thank you for sharing it with us.

I think the coin sits in a MS64 PCGS slab. its very tough as these are not seen very often in such a high grade.

I'm with the MS64 crowd on this coin.
For my set, I'm with nwcoast, where I would be happy with a nice XF/AU image

This is a nice coin...... Just to mushy for a 65 or better...... the surfaces are very nice but I feel it is at best a 64. I made a PCGS 65 a few years back and it had a superior strike. I also made a NGC 65 and an NGC 66. This date has been very good for me!

A 64-decent luster but a somewhat eroded reverse.
  • guitarwesguitarwes Posts: 9,290 ✭✭✭

Very nice coin for the date/mm!

Although it's very close to a 65 for that date/mm, I think grade guarantee physcoanalysis will hold it back to MS64 considering it skyrockets in price at the 65 grade level.

Let me say the 25-S is a very tough date in high mint state grades. The coin your showing has great detail for the date as most are very weakly struck, especially on the reverse. On the reverse if ya have ANY detail on the head of the Buff your in really good shape along with a split tail and a visible ridge line of wool down the Buffs shoulder. Now to the hip bone and flank. Most of the 25-S buffs in 64 and lower will not have a very well formed hip bone and the flank may seem a bit flat, most collectors mistake this for rub, but let me remind you that the first place you'll see rub is also the last place to fill out on the strike , so this makes it very difficult to get it right from an image as the collector needs to tilt the coin to look for a break in the luster. With all said I love the look of your 25-S, it's a better than average strike and the luster appears to be strong, I'm thinking 64 and a very nice one at that. Your Buffs is VERY nice. Thanks for showing it....Joe

Here's mine. It's in an NGC old slab graded MS-62...Look how flat the hip bone and flank is. Most that look at this coin will think AU but there is zero rub on this coin. The luster is strong and I love the eye appeal. Yours has a much better strike.

The bitterness of "Poor Quality" is remembered long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.
  • That is a beautiful 64 and would think it could get a plus for the surfaces; however, as others have said, the die errosion on the reverse will keep it from a 65.
