    Yes, somebody screwed up big time, but at least many of the early coins were not very nice before they were cleaned.
    Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible.     i know it sure saved many a coin from environmental damage becoming extreme...image

    I just hope it wasn't a true inherited collection in which they thought the coins were dirty and needed to be cleaned up before selling image

    Issues aside IMHO the set will sell as it should still appeal to smoebody image

    The 1799 is a key to this deal. If it is a counterfeit, all bets are off.

    The coins are stomach turners, but it is fascinating and would be fun to own.
    A complete set of almost anything is great. But Large Cents? Very cool.
    We're all born MS70. I'm about a Fine 15 right now.

    LOL. I noticed that as well. You can kinda see the 1799 from a distance in one shot, but it looks dateless at that angle. Speaking of which, the 1793 is so washed out by the lighting used that you can't see what little date is still there. I think his $3800 starting bid is all the money... certainly no great deal at that level- but it would be an ok set to use as a base for upgrades I suppose.

    I'm curious as to the sentiments here... if you owned that set, since they're all cleaned anyway, would you consider darkening them? Not for deception mind you, just to make them look a bit more palatable.

    Sure I'd store them in my old sulfur laden envelopes and let the brimstone kick in.
