The fabric used to make swimsuits in the early 20th century tended to become very clingy when wet and showed body parts very clearly though they were covered. In an era when women wore clothing that showed little the swimsuits actually were quite revealing.
At the last coin show I showed my wife two 1917 quarters and asked her to tell me the difference. It took a second, but then she smiled and said "What happened?" LOL

It is interesting to see the change in cultural standards over the years.... And really, it is all so ridiculous. Looking at the changes in standards over the last one hundred years, I have no doubt, that in another hundred years, there will be no standards at all. In NYC, it is legal for women to go bare breasted... a court challenge over why men could and women could not, resulted in that decision. Onward, ever onward.... Cheers, RickO
My mother wouldn't allow me to collect SLQ's until that special class in 5th grade. ("Because the breast may as well be there even if they changed it!")
Good old fashioned Catholic orthodox guilt, shame, and punishment, hooray.
