Here's a brief sample from Vol 09 of this series. It concerns the replacement of Moffat and his neglect of duty.

    January 7, 1852

    Hon. Thomas Corwin
    Secretary of Treasury
    Washington
    Sir,
The copartnership of Moffat & Co. of San Francisco, contractors with the United States for
assaying gold, in pursuance of the Act of Congress of 1850, Chapter 90, will expire by the
written agreement of the parties, on the 14th date of February next, Mr. John L. Moffat writing for the firm. From that date, the assaying business, and the performance of the contract aforesaid, will be faithfully continued by the remaining copartners, to wit, Joseph R. Curtis, Philo H. Perry and Samuel H. Ward, under the name of “Curtis, Perry & Ward.”

From the commencement of the performance of the contract, in January last, Mr. Moffat has
employed himself exclusively in other pursuits, and totally neglected every duty at the Assay Office, having been chiefly engaged in mining.

I respectfully request the Department to acknowledge the receipt of this communication, and a full recognition of the rights and duties of Curtis, Perry & Ward from and after the day herein before mentioned.
    I am Sir,
    Most respectfully yours,
    J. R. Curtis

    Great News!

Should it really list items that the general public an not access, i. e., Numismatist, Numismatic Scrapbook, etc.

Thanks Roger... these letters are often quite interesting. I enjoy reading the old style of writing with the salutations and respect communicated - sadly lost along the trail of time. Cheers, RickO

NNP has agreements with many organizations and copies of most older hobby magazines and newsletters are freely available. Numismatist, Numismatic Scrapbook, Coin World, and some others are owned by the ANA and Amos Press, respectively. The Numismatist is available to ANA members on-line, The others have not given NNP permission to present their copyright products.
