Will owners of certain cheap medals now get a windfall profit?

Some really ugly, cheap medals were recently in the international news. Now that the event these medals "commemorate" has been cancelled, will the market place a high value on these? Do collector markets value similar items in the same way? If there's an increased value, does it last?

Not sure which medals you are referring to, but I was wondering the same thing in regard to the challenge coins created as mementos for those who were to be involved in the US/NK summit. I don't think they had a date (at least not a month and day) on them, so they are good to go once the chess game evolves further ("Sorry the first summit didn't work out, but thanks NK for releasing the Americans you were holding hostage!").
The thing is, they were never "issued" and aren't available on the market, so not sure how they could be valued.
I think I'll write to the White House and ask for one. I don't expect they will send me one, but for 35 cents (I use old stamps bought at a discount), it is worth a try.
just my perspective, but "Modern" medals tend to be viewed the same as Modern coins. they are generally not PM and the designs are generally very ordinary. I say that understanding the description given and since the event is some spurious might be held sort of thing I doubt there will be much interest by any serious collectors.
Ooops --- "Commemorative North Korea summit coin selling at a discount."

On a US COIN forum, I really don't care about the medals....or the politics.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
The ugly medal is of the same type as many others people collect. No one is suggesting any "political" baggage. (Although, most of the so-called "challenge coins" are much better designs than this mess.)
Depends on what happens with the NK situation. If the country opens up and the current U.S. administration gets the credit for it, these medals probably have some staying power.
There still is an AOL?

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
If you check the White House Gift Shop website (which took me an hour to access after that news broke) you will see that the challenge coin they are selling is not the same as the one produced for the official delegation.
Perfect opportunity to cancel the dies and sell a more appropriate souvenir.

So can they just waffle those medals and sell them at a profit?

They only struck (or cast?) 250 of them, all serial numbered. I presume that all of these from the first batch have been sold.
The White House gift shop website doesn't have a photo posted but is selling them as of today on their website for a bit over $20, discounted from the $24.95 full price.
If the new ones differ from the first 250 (and they probably will, at least in the numbering), I presume that the first 250 will command a premium, at least for a while.
RE: "...all serial numbered."
Hmmmm...thought the original press release said "...all cereal numberes." Maybe the electrons got garbled --- or got wet in the milk.
They have mostly been eaten by Yahoo and all their email actually runs on Yahoo..... Once they were a powerhouse! But so was MCI....
The 250 medals of the design shown in the news a few days who ate not the same ones that the gift shop is selling. Theirs is a different design.
Probably sell as well as the T Shirt guy during the Alamo selling the "I kicked Santa Ana's Butt" T shirts.
With all this hoopla they will probably sell a lot of these.
BBC now reports a surge in orders for these medals.
I like the Jim Mattis challenge coin
This disc is a joke noting a P T Barnum type event that is nothing short of a political hoax and pardon the pun, a chinese fire drill. It looks cheap. I have several challenge discs from noted organizations and the quality is top shelf. It would make an ok washer with a nice big hole drilled in the middle. Peace Roy

Considering the source, they were probably forged.........
If you call right now to purchase one for the low, low cost of $19.99 you get a special bonus, 99 more free. Collect 100 and redeem them for your own Nobel Peace Prize.
And here comes the politics...
It's like a virus.

I collect challenge coins... not interested in this one since it is now not an event. I would like to get the official President Trump challenge coin though...Cheers, RickO
Wait a minute and things will change, like the weather.
Looks like the summit could be back on, possibly even on the scheduled date.
I read that only 250 originals were struck. I also read that a particular reporter (don't remember who) received number 106 (or some other particular number). So, I'm making the presumption that the first 250 were all serial numbered.
Yes, the new design apparently also includes the south Korean President. I'd pay $50 for one of the originals and I don't collect challenge coins, but this one has a great story. Anyone have one to sell me at that price?

I want this one.

The reverse shows "Air Force 1" flying low over the White House. On the WH lawn it looks like someone slicing into the rough on Pennsylvania Avenue near the FBI building. But it might also be the golfer some Ike dollar fans see on the moon....
Yes, it's part of Oath, Verizon's 1980s Internet cover band and home for formerly well known brands...
The ones being sold on the WH Gift shop site clearly say they are not the ones in pictures distributed to the media. Probably cheap made-in-China knockoffs.

When I could finally get on the website it said 2 months backorder. So, China is a good guess,
They couldn't find a US company to make these things?
I just bought some thanks for the tip. And NO not the Stormy one! Who knows maybe Trump might put an autographed letter in it!
Will this be the challenge coin they send me? Only time will tell.
100% not. The product description clearly states it is not that one. The one you bought also has the South Korean President on it.
Well I guess time will tell. When I get it I will post a pic.
Try and find anything made in the USA any more. Its all from some other country so that does not really surprise me any more. "Hence Make America Great Again!"
Ebayer's already have it for pre sale. $75.00

To funny he even has a receipt from the White House Sale of $598.00 heck he will make a nice profit at $75.00 if he sells them all.
3 sold in the last 24 hours somebody is making money. And he has it advertised as the South Korean President in this one. Good marketing.
Victor mouse traps and galvanized steel trash cans stand out as things I have bought that are made in the USA, but stuff made here is tough to find.
RE: "Try and find anything made in the USA any more."
I've never had any difficulty getting any required product or service from a US company. The price might not be the lowest, but I'd rather spend the $$ here rather than in China, India, Korea, etc. (The list of items ranges from color book printing - ALL mine are printed in the USA, mostly by union members - to medals, technology equipment, and a wide range of items.)
But -- the buyer has to be willing to look around, do some investigation, and not accept just the cheapest offer.
The illustrated medal is the version intended for immediate staff and functionary participants. (I have a couple of them from WH contacts.) I have not seen the souvenir version.
Soon our "real" coins will be made overseas.
That was the speculation --- no one has identified the manufacturer.
Will these coins now be worth something?
Who knows about the medals? They are so ugly they might draw interest on that basis.
Alibaba & Rhum?
The obviously very successful meeting will spur interest in this item. Prices will likely get a boost for a few weeks. I still want the new Presidential Challenge Coin.... got to make that a project... Cheers, RickO
