Maybe a fun thread about tone.

Who knows how many different types of tone patterns or unique ways for a coin to tone, but my time here has taught me that there are a lot. It also seems that many members, myself included, have a type that they favor over all others. Maybe it's bag toning on dollars or even something specific to that, a crescent shape. Maybe it's a mottled blend of color over an entire coin. For me it tends to be bulls-eye or rim tone encircling a coin. Quite often that can be induced by placing coins in Capital plastic and it really looks nice on Proofs.
I can't post a picture for the thread because I'm at work, but if you have that special tone pattern or type and a coin to show it, please do. Maybe we can get some Oooohs and Aaaahs out of the membership.

I have posted this before but I never get tired of looking at it. Certainly is "rim toning encircling a coin". I was told it came from a holder in a 1964 bank promotion...don't know. I'm sure there are some nice coins to come...take care...

I don't generally shop for color. But I found this one oddly alluring. Normally, a circulated coin just goes gray, or if you're lucky, golden brown. This one went a different direction that I find rather pleasant.
Some years ago, Paul Montgomery told me how he collected a fabulous set of toned commems. He said he bought blast white coins, put them into an album, and then stored the album in his hot, humid attic for a number of years. Bingo...homemade spectacular natural toners!
Tommy, that speckled "look" on Walkers isn't that unusual and I have always liked it.
One of the things I like is a change in color from blue to red, like with these:

The best way to detect most AT is to know what most NT can look like. The distinction between the two is often blurred.
For one of my toning experiments (decades ago), I bought a blazing gem Unc 1926 Sesqui 50c from Harry Forman. Unfortunately, the coin was hairlined. I put the coin in my wall oven in the center of a glass plate and sprinkled Flour of Sulfur around the edge of the plate several inches from the coinr. The gas pilot light in the oven would help the process along.
After several days I completely forgot about the experiment. I rarely bake but I love a broiled steak. Over the ensuing months I had several. One day, it was time for a pie. I opened the top part of the oven to find a **dull, dark gray, sulfur coated, coin! I have a hot attic here in FL. I'll try this "attic" method. IMO, the toning that occurs will be natural.

So I am very new to collecting coins. I collected cards before but started coins to bond with my dad! How exactly do these coins tone? Is it just a chemical reaction? I know people manipulate coins to give off insanely vibrant colors, how can I tell between fake toning and real toning? All of my dads coins that had been sitting in cardboard squares in his closet just developed a sort of brownish/ blackish "tone" it makes them look sort of dirty for a lack of a better term.
A government accident left me a former man, a potato. That photo on my profile is a low resolution selfie. I like coins.
While woodgrain is my preference for copper, I bought this Morgan just for the attractive toning(at least to me).

Snatched this a few mos ago for the EA.
I thought this one to be unusual as both sides are toned in a circular pattern, yet the obverse is so much darker but then goes to nearly pure white. In hand it's a very dark gunmetal. I believe this dark end-stage of toning is close to what I've heard referred to here as "terminal".

Yikes on all the coins..Wow.

For the Commem people...I don't collect them but sure admire them. I find that the original card board mailers and their toning is quite interesting.
I will go with "Subtle Toning"...

Wheres Ricko? Well, someone had to say it.
For me, kinda depends on the coin. For Lincoln Cents, green is nice:

Bustypotato, Toning is a natural phenomenon the occurs over many years in an environment where sulpher and other compounds are present in some fashion. Real toning will appear "in the coin" where artificial toning will appear "on top of the coin" in many cases. There is a natural progression experts look for to determine if toning that has multiple colors is legit.
It's a tricky business you need to know to prevent paying a premium for a pretty but messed with coin.

rumor has it - when Ricko saw this thread he ran to hunker down behind a goat.
Actually, I do not have a goat... not my type of partner. Nor do I have any tarnished coins... I did go check the couple of albums I have had for years... and there is no tarnish there either. That does not make me sad.
Cheers, RickO
Toned Coins Matter.....
I want to change. I like this one.
I'm with @Ricko and avoid tarnish on my coins, so I have none to post. I will admit though that some of the colors are pretty, but I'm too worried about the long term effect and losing the original beauty and look of the coin.
Donato
Edited to add:
When I look at a coin to buy, I want it to look like the day it was minted and that is why I can't get past the tarnish or the toning if you will. It had none of that when it was minted.

Yes, if you consider red changing to red/brown. Thus the color designation on copper.

I see some real beauties here! Great theead
Too each is own, I have a couple white coins that I like. However, its unnatural to me to have older blast white coins like the day they were minted. Pre 1900 ish. I do enjoy blast white Peace dollars, Mercs and an occasional Walkers as these designs are great.
I find most white coins lack soul or are boring due to their design. The good news for those that love white coins ( plenty off folks do) is that they sell at a steep discount to their attractively toned counterparts. More coins for you!
None of my pre war toned coins have toned more then the day I bought them

Mark, I appreciate your comments. That is what collecting as a hobby is all about. To do what pleases you, not to do what someone else tells you to do.
I wish I could find those dealers that sell blast white coins at a discount. I haven't met one yet. Maybe I should look at a few toners first and throw them off track on what I really want.
Thanks for your thoughts, I appreciate them.

Didn't say that NICE blast white coins ( like your new Merc purchase) would be cheap. Just cheaper then their attractively toned counterparts. Collecting what you like is the key to enjoying your collection. Collect what you are comfortable with.

hey Mark, I saw a few of the commems you posted the other day and some of your Walkers, I think I'll collect what YOU like.
