I saw a clip on the internet that based on times "Big Red" would have beat Justify by 25 lengths. WOW!

Justify's time was a smidge over 2:28, a bit more than 4 seconds off Secretariat's record 2:24 flat.

Yes, and how far does a horse go in 4+ seconds going 40MPH. ;)

odds of Gronkowski the horse winning that race: 27-1

odds of Gronkowski the human emerging from the stands in his birthday suit and running around the track if Gronkowski the horse had come from the depths and sucked Justify up: 1-27

you'll never be able to outrun a bad diet

The time honored number in a thoroughbred horse race is 1 second equals 5 lengths.

Secretariat versus Justify in the Belmont Stakes would have been a similar result as Secretariat versus Sham in the Belmont Stakes.

It's not even a debatable point.

No horse will ever break that mile and a half record.

I no longer follow horse racing very much. But it seems to me that this is a weak crop of three year olds. That does happen some years.

I mean Gronkowski a horse from Australia which is well known to have inferior thoroughbreds versus American thoroughbreds, his first race in America, with a two month layoff, got a bad start and appeared to have trouble handling the track for about the first mile running dead last, and after 6f in 1:13 which is slow for the Belmont Stakes, so the horses in front of him shouldn't have gotten that tired, this horse really shouldn't have gone past the rest of the field like they were standing still.

Could Gronkowski turn out to be a great horse? Perhaps...with thoroughbreds they can be very unpredictable. However I do think a weak crop comes into play rather than any possible greatness of Gronkowski.

But we shall see how Gronkowski does in the future. I have a feeling this horse will windup burning a lot of bettor's money over his racing career because the handicappers will place too much emphasis on this Belmont Stakes second place finish and so constantly overbet the horse.

He will probably return to England where he has been doing very well

The connections plan on racing the horse throughout his 3 year old term. Might be wise to skip the Travers at Saratoga this summer. Baffert does not have much luck there. He brought American Pharoah there 3 years ago and lost in the Travers. The fall Breeders Cup will likely be on his agenda.

You may be right about the Travers. Baffert lives in California and may prefer to showcase the horse in a Delmar race, rather than at Saratoga. However the Travers has that long tradition that Baffert may go for.

And then like you stated, definitely point to the Breeders Cup.

Agree. Saratoga beat Man O War, Secretariat and Pharoah. Graveyard

Surprised how easily Justify won. He seemed to labor at the Preakness.

As far as all-time great horses, I don't remember Secretariat but the year that stands out to me is 1989 - Sunday Silence and Easy Goer were both great horses. Goer's Belmont has to go down as one of the great races of all time.

You need to google the 1973 Belmont. It's been labeled the Greatest Race of All Time.

Easy Goer's time of 2:26 in 89 is the second fastest time for the Belmont since it went to a mile and a half.

Even at that speed, however, Easy Goer would have been beaten by 10 lengths by Secretariat in 1973.

I've watched it many times. I am not arguing against Secretariat or his status as greatest ever. But there have been other great horses and great performances. Watch the 89 Belmont - Easy Goer beat a great horse by 8 lengths. To Sunday Silence's credit, he came back and won the Breeders Cup Classic (barely). Easy Goer was a great two year old and won eight times as a 3 year old but still lost Horse of the year to Sunday Silence.

Losing owner calls for investigation into tactics used in Belmont Stakes

Mike Repole, co-owner of horses that finished fourth and last in Saturday's Belmont Stakes, told the New York Post on Sunday he hopes stewards will look into the tactics used by the jockey for the "other" horse trained by Bob Baffert.

Repole questioned Florent Geroux's ride on Restoring Hope, a stablemate of Belmont winner and 13th Triple Crown champion Justify, who is trained by Baffert for owner Gary West.

While saying Justify was the deserving winner, Repole told reporter Tom Pedula he felt like Restoring Hope, a 37-1 shot, ran interference for Justify against other horses in the race.

    4 seconds at 40mph = 234.667 feet.

A length is ~8 feet, so 4 seconds at 40mph = 29 lengths, give or take.
