1962 Roosevelt MS65 Sample Slab

I bought a 1962 Roosevelt Dime in a PCGS slab today at a yard sale. When I took a closer look it said “Sample” on the slab. Does anyone know how many of these were made by PCGS for this particular dime in MS65? What type of value am I looking at? Thanks!

I have a few samples and they do bring a premium. I want to say an extra 20-30 bucks but could be higher if the numbers issued are low. Might want to see when these had been issued. Perhaps at a Fun show or another show.

People pls correct me but on some early sample slabs, wasn't the grade just added on the label regardless of the actual grade of the coin? Not sure if that was the case on this generation of sample slabs. In any case, the value is in the sample slab.

If you got it at a yard sale you probably got a good deal.

These sorts of things were free back in the day. I got an NCG silver dime sample slab for free way back when by getting my name on some coin company's mailing list.

  • I did read an article indicating the coins contained in the slabs may not match the grade. It’s pretty cool nonetheless and I did get a pretty good deal. Thanks everyone for the information.

Just curious... How can it be a sample if it's graded? It's basically a certified coin without an individual cert#.

They aren't uncommon. They sell on eBay for about $15-$20. Promo items. Still bought at a yard sale you probably got it at the right price. Nice pickup.

  • I’ve been trying to read a bit more about these in hopes of finding out how many were produced. So far all I have learned is it’s lukely a generation 4.1.

Always something new to learn when it comes to coins.

I am not sure that production # s exist for most sample slabs. Obviously the issuer knew but I am not sure it was recorded or publicized.

I've got 4 or 5 sample slabs.... different slab types too. Don't for a moment recall where I got them but have had them for probably 20 years.... maybe more. Will dig them up and post pics.

How come I never find things like this at yard sales?? Neat find, I am not a sample slab collector, but would have bought that at a yard sale for sure. Cheers, RickO
