1982 Lincoln Small Date Cent 3.1g Copper

I found this little gem tonight just looking through a box of pennies from the bank. I didn't mention it in the title, but it is also slightly off-center ~ there is hardly any rim just under the bust. A friend said I should try to sell it on ebay, although I probably wouldn't get much for it or should I send it to be graded? I'm not up on grading or prices anyway. The coin is more red-brown than what the picture portrays. Is there a fact sheet somewhere I can do an eval on self-grading?
Thanks :)

The picture is too small to determine details, however, the minor 'off center' is not significant enough to add value... many cents are seen with this degree of shift. Good luck with your search... Cheers, RickO

Welcome to the forum, it sound as though you're having fun with your coins. Keep it up!

In general, until design elements are missing from the strike, the coin is not considered an 'off-center' strike and thus will have no premium.

You may also have a strike from very slightly misaligned dies. Check to see if the reverse 'off-center' is equal to what you see on the obverse. If so, then the dies are aligned properly. If one side of the coin appears 'off-center' and the other does not, then the dies are misaligned.

Congrats on your finds and best of luck in your searching.

Sending coins in for grading is an expensive proposition. Make sure you have something of real value before you do so. The coin you show here appears ordinary and has no premium.

    All glory is fleeting.
  • Are 1982 small date copper (not zinc) Lincoln cents worth anything?
Where can I go to get information? I googled this and read conflicting arguments on what it was worth.
    Thanks ~ David

Why would you think they are worth anything? I am not trying to be argumentative, I am just trying to figure out your where you are coming from on this, in case I am missing something.

In perfect (and I mean PERFECT) condition they might (not sure) have some added value, but any 1982 P (no mintmark) cent you pull from circulation is worth one cent, or perhaps 2 cents if you are going to melt it down for the copper, but that is illegal so don't announce that here.

  • I found out that PCGS likes these, but only in grade 66 or 67 Red.... http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/146020
And the 1982-D copper small date is worth something, so I was just asking.
You aren't very nice to a newbie like the other people have been.

If your lucky to find 10 of that year penny you will only need 1264 pennies plus shipping. Now after you buy this and study each and every page you will be ready to come back here and summaries what you think your find is worth. Hope this helps and welcome.

Now to be fair I do NOT collect pennies but I do like the old steel pennies. I have bought a few graded pennies but they were pre slabbed and they were about $100.00 but I don't even know if there worth the $100.00. But I bought them. I really don't know what your penny is worth so after you find out please let me know I might want to start looking for them. I have about 200 POUNDS of old coins I was going to go through after RETIREMENT in 10 years from now. So I should have about 400 Pounds by then.

This is what I bought for $129.99 graded from MCM the big boys.

They sold out in short order after I bought them.

I bought these off of Ebay cant remember what I paid was under 50 bucks but thought they were neat.

It will help if you are a little thicker skinned when you post here, but if you come with an honest question you will get some great advice (we have all been through it, including me). It gets a little tough since there are some trolls who come by to intentionally ask silly questions that they already know the answer to (I am NOT saying that applies to you).

In any case, if you are weighing coins (I myself do not have a scale) I think the payoff would be if you could find a 1983 cent struck on a leftover copper planchet. There are certainly some out there, but they are totally unnoticed by anyone who does not take the time to weigh their cents. (And, of course, the 1982-D copper small date you mentioned).

    Keep a look'n.

Generally speaking a coin has to be worth a bunch to maximize getting it graded.

    bob :)
PS: If it is not a $200 coin I won't send for grading.

Just one quick question ~ Do banks fill up boxes of coins from their coin separator machines, to send to the Federal Reserve? Or do banks buy boxes of coins from the Feds?... :)

The banks mostly (or always?) ship those bags off (not sure if to the Fed or just a coin processor like Brink's, Loomis, etc.). They then order rolled coin (in boxes) back from these places.

While not common, I have heard of some people buying the bags from the bank before they get shipped out.

  • The reason I ask is that I keep running into the same green paint on 1-2 coins out of 50 in several rolls. I live in a 250,000 person city and the latest boxes I receive come from a 40,000 person town and they are a higher quality than from a bigger city.
    Thanks :)

The answer is, in 1982, the mint only (officially) produced 1982-D small dates in zinc, so if you find a copper it is valuable. For the 1982 (p), they produced the large and small dates in both zinc and copper, so there is no premium for any of these 4.

The "green paint" is likely verdigris/corrosion/envior. damage.

Someone paid "less than $50" for coins worth exactly 3-cents? Amazing! Simply amazing! ;(

Why are those cents slabbed? Am I missing something? Guess this post will not be popular with our host. Sorry.

No. It's green paint. I know the difference.

My only guess is if someone was returning searched rolls to the bank and they wanted to mark them (such as an end coin) so they knew they would not get their own rolls back in the future, but with all the coin counting machines many banks don't even take rolls any more.

Ohhh yes sorry those were given in the celebration of the Rare Coin Market Report starting back into production. It was soon after that I was able to get all of the first production sets of the RCMR Magazine back when they first started. I needed the coins to complete the set sort of a special thing if you have everything if you get what I was trying to do. They are autographed and I believe there were a total of 5 coins.
