A word about the "North Orange County Monthly Coin Show"

(This would be Anaheim, Orange County, California).

The place was hoppin' today! Which for me, was really good news, since I live about 2 miles away (if that).

I got there around 11:30, and don't recall seeing this many collectors there in the past. The entire meeting room was filled, maybe 25 tables, from maybe 20 dealers?

There is a new promoter, being the same people who do the Buena Park show twice a year. And they've really been able to turn it around.

Back in the late 90's, it was a "don't miss". Back then, the weekly rotation of shows in the area was much more healthy as well. But over time, it started to become a sleepy, annoying, waste of time. With the new promoter, they've gotten some higher quality dealers, and I think have turned the corner to becoming well worth your time.

I think there are still some issues with promotion.

  • It rarely shows up in the CoinZip listing, which seems like a really easy thing to make happen!?
  • You won't find signs, for the most part. Just go in the backdoor of the Embassy Suites, and you'll find it easy enough.
  • The name of the show is somewhat fluid. Is it the "Anaheim show?" "North County Monthly?" "Buena Park Monthly?" I'm not sure. Their website just calls it the Monthly show!!

Calendar available here.

Anyway, if you stopped going because it wasn't worth the drive....I think it would be worth checking out again.

(Disclaimer: I don't have anything to do with the show! I just like having one so close, so I'm trying to help build it even more!) ;)

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......

Nice to have a show close by... that is what I liked so much in Seattle... lots of shows, no more than 15-20 minute drive.... Cheers, RickO

    Well....OF COURSE!! ;)

(It just wasn't the intent of the post....But now that you asked!)

There's a relatively new dealer making the rounds here who is just filled-to-overflowing with MS-65 and 66 Walkers and Washingtons. I mean, every date...."Build your collection TODAY!" Had a nice chat with him, and he's retired 20 years Navy, and 20 year second career, and now plans to deal for 20 years. ;) I have his card...but believe he goes by Cal John, Route 66 Silver. Check him out...will be at Long Beach.

I took the opportunity to look for an upgrade, or two, to my Walker set. Found a really nice MS-65 1942 that I really liked, (and liked better than some of the 66's of the same date). Walkers are kind of like that. The variation in grade is sometimes more drastic than the variation BETWEEN grades, so I like finding the diamonds that fit my particular (and maybe peculiar) eye....

Also found a "Minor Variety" 1881 3-Cent nickel in VF, that normally would be easy to gloss over at that grade. (Another thread deals with it). But I have been interested in 3-Cent nickels for awhile, and just really HAD to buy it if only to check out the "Minor Variety" for myself. Even at $40, it was probably an over-priced buy, but it was just for fun.

As I said....nice little show, especially when you can see it all in less than an hour on a Sunday morning!

Since it's a monthly show is the February show only 90% the size of the July show?

Glad to here you enjoyed the show. Great to be able to drive over and be at the show in minutes too. I love the half’s myself and find myself bouncing between the blast whites and the Carmel colored yummies.

    Best place to buy !
