I dug out an old proof set...

This was supposed to be a 1971 No S dime. Haven't really looked at it in 15 years. Not so sure.... Did somebody switch it on me back then?

I have an 1803 large cent that seems to randomly switch to an 1805, depending on the day I look at it.
I think they call the phenomenon, "Bad eyesight".
Nice joke...I believe it is a 1970 No "S" Proof dime.
Some old friends don't look as good as others do as they age.
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...

No, it's just a regular ol' dime.
Brother, can you spare a dime ?

edited to say YOU GOT ME
Looks like a 1970 no S.
that's a 70 no S proof dime, and it's very rare.
No, not rare, not scarce, just pricey as the demand seems high. They are always available, raw and graded on ebay. About a dozen or so right now.

rare
Cool !!!

there are probably about 1,000-1,500 in existence. though they might always be listed for sale on eBay I don't think the demand is high enough for those coins to sell easily, collectors either want to find the coin intact in a set or at the highest grade level but still priced reasonably.
using the URS scale the coin is probably around URS-11. PCGS shows about 314 graded and I suppose NGC is probably close to that. the coin is what most collectors and dealers would call scarce and eBay aside, most would understand it as rare. although I haven't actively looked for it, a 1970 no S Dime rarely shows up for sale, eBay listings aside.
Over the course of 40 years, I found three or four of these in sets. I never found the other missing mintmarks, just this one.
This would be one I would only buy in an original set or authenticated - If I were looking for one. Cheers, RickO
Just curious. How can one definitively tell from the pic that it wasn't just a 1970-P from a bank roll? What gives it away as a proof & no-S? What am I missing?

Unfortunately, I've never had (and never will) an eye for such details............ Guess that's why I'll always be a "Whitman-folder-from-circulation" kind of guy.....
That's a cool classic modern!
I knew it would happen.
thats nice to have in the old collection.
The pictured coin is one that would be a candidate for conservation. With the haze presently on the coin it has negative eye appeal.
