In continued tribute to the 200 year anniversary of 1818 coinage, this Bust Quarter Guess-The-Grade features the 1818 Browning 5 variety. This is a scarcer variety for 1818, and I think everyone will pretty much guess the grade. Maybe some of you recall the backstory related to this coin, and others.
Feel free to guess the PCGS grade for fun if you'd like, along with any comments. Also, if you have an 1818 B-5, please post a picture of it.

I think it is XF45. NIce coin!
Here is mine, a little dark but at least 'original'.
Best, SH
45 and delicious.
p.s. what's going on at 12 o'clock of the obverse?
Hi SH, you have an old friend of mine it seems! Glad she has a good home.
Mike, that mark at 12:00 is Liberty's mohawk!
Nice coin... I would like to know the 'backstory' if you have time..... Cheers, RickO
XF40 Details
I figured that the thing at 12 O'Clock was the variety, but the second coin doesn't have that and is the same B number??
Looks like an AU 50 to me. Hey I’ve also got to say how lovely this piece is. It looks so original.
What ever the grade is I find it very attractive.
Thanks for sharing

XF and part of a hoard found in NY(?) some years ago. Sorry I forgot the name.....
All were marked with a similar countermark. I speculated at the time it was intentionally put on the coins so that if they began showing up in commerce the owner would know his stash was compromised.
A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.
A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

Cool, the countermark probably means it is in a details holder, but I still like it at 45, nice coin for sure. Scuba, good to know I have one of your previous CBQ's.
Best, SH
Very nice
I'd probably call it a 45 or 50 (and really nice)...I'd guess PCGS would not straight grade it due to the "damage" (just like they won't straight grade the 'E' and 'L' counterstamped quarters). Found an interesting article about that hoard...treasurenet.com/forums/treasure-news/56169-mohawk-valley-hoard-fantastic-find.html
45
This coin was in an NCS Genuine holder, and crosseda at PCGS as Genuine VF Details (92-Cleaned). I like it as a 45, and the the fact that it came out of the Mohawk Valley Hoard is nice. This variety is an R-5, and there were many difficult to obtain bust quarters and halves that surfaced out of the Hoard.
Get out the metal detector @ricko ! It was found in upstate New York. The link above from @msch1man is a good read about the Hoard, and you can also find other tidbits if you do a search. Mike Capawan, owner of Keshequa Coins, acquired and sold over 200 pieces from the hoard. I remember when he used to have the coins in his cases at area shows, and they were great to view. Unfortunatley Mike's website is no longer active, as it used to have some great information written up about the Hoard. Other coins from the Hoard were also sold in a Stack's auction.
One thing about the Hallmark punched into the top of every coin is that contrary to what has sometimes been reported, I think there were two bust halves that did not have the Hallmark punch. Maybe @lkeigwin might know.

Nice coins, I picked up this one at Stormville market years ago, I think for around a grand raw.
One was an 1817/3. I don't recall if the other was cited.
Lance.
edited to add: Among the stash was an 1815/2 in very nice shape that supposedly graded AU58. I can't see how it would have gotten a straight grade with the notch so perhaps it was the second. Just speculation on my part.
