Mint Cancelled WAFFLE Coin

ECHOESECHOES Posts: 2,974 ✭✭✭✭✭

I was of the understanding that these waffled coins were scrap.
How would this piece escape the US Mint?

They sell the scrap. Astute marketers buy it and promote it.

They are created from error coins. When the mint mistakenly creates errors they waffle the errors and they are then shipped off to a vendor for melting. From what I gather , when a mint employee finds some errors in a bin, whether several or the whole bin they waffle them. Sometimes the waffles escape the mint and make their way to the market. I didn’t know this until I read it from a CSNS exhibit lasts week.

In some of the numismatic rags some years back, there were articles on these.
From what I recall, from the investigation....

The mint cancels out errors (ie....creates waffles)
They put them in a bin for scrap and sell that scrap metal
Someone had an idea (I forget if someone approached the company or someone at the company approached a dealer) to sell these.
They were sold, the US Mint got notified, got involved, and investigated.
Since they were sold as scrap metal, and not legal coins, and they were waffled and therefore not considered coinage, it was found to not be unlawful.

Last I heard, or paid attention to, the US Mint was rethinking how they did this, but they probably didn't change things.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

How are these classified? Although cancelled for a reason, since cancelled, are they still considered an error coin? Or is there any classification other than it is a mint product? Cheers, RickO

These are not classified as error coins, altho many error guys handle these.

These are called US Mint Canceled Waffle Coins.

They are considered collectable because they
are 'Waffled' on the floor of the Mint(s).

If they went thru the Dutch Waffling machine
at another location, they would be scrap or damaged coins.

There are many many many hundreds of thousands
of them that have not made it back to the smelters.

When I took a floor tour of the Denver Mint about
5 years ago, we saw three huge metal Bins filled with
Waffled Dimes, outside on the loading dock in the back,
waiting to be picked up and driven to the smelter than
    the Denver Mint uses.

I've even purchased a group of Martha Washington
Pattern Dollars, struck at the Denver Mint, that were
    Waffled.

They're fun, interesting, but certainly not even scarce,
    with a few exceptions.

I have only seen one of these, A waffled New York Proof "S" mint Quarter ....

These are fascinating and collectable in my opinion, and although I don' have any US waffled coins yet, I do have some pre-euro German coins that are waffled.

My next fear is counterfeit waffles. The waffled coins sell for a premium, so how long (if not already) until someone forges the waffles? I assume the machines or "dies" are not proprietary to the Mint.

I've been examining every waffled coin I see for years and have NEVER been able to determine the reason even one was destroyed! :(

Can someone post one with an obvious error?

I have as well looked for obvious errors and have not found any except some improperly annealed coins.

  • Insider2Insider2 Posts: 14,452 ✭✭✭✭✭

I wouldn't know what one of those (improperly annealed coins) looked like if it burned my butt. :)

Anyone have an image - waffled or not?

Actual errors on Waffles: Yea, they seem to
be as scarce as Hen's teeth.

I recall seeing a Presidential Dollar with an indented
    strike about 6-8 years ago.

The waffling effect makes seeing most errors very
difficult, and in some cases, I've seen 'brockages'
that were just two coins going thru the Machine
together (like a mated pair), leaving a look of a
brockage, but it was the other coin being pressed
    into the host waffle.

I saw these waffled coins hyped on a home shopping coin show a couple years ago. Can't remember how much they wanted.

Maybe they will show up on the menu at "I-Hop" or "Aunt Nellie's Waffle House?" ;)

Thanks. I knew about these. :)

Annealing is done to soften the metal. I forgot it changed the color (sintered - LOL). My error was the "or not" in my request.

To me, the coolest waffled canceled coins are often the ones dated years before the Mint got their waffling machine.

...great...now some hater is going to start a thread that all current U.S. minted error coins should be confiscated and sent back to the mint for waffling...probably form it into some kind of pithy question with a poll to ;)

  • FredWeinbergFredWeinberg Posts: 5,816 ✭✭✭✭✭

That's one of them, or at least it
looks like it's from the group I bought.

They were struck in Denver, and for
$30 you got an incredible deal, imo.

    @FredWeinberg

That is awesome! Thanks for the info. I tried to find some info and couldn't find anything on them. I knew it was a dollar pattern, but never knew they came waffled. Only problem is, that ever since I've had it, I now want to buy a non waffled pattern. Do you know what year they were minted? I always assumed they were from 2007, but you said it would be around 2013 or so?

I have one of these (not sure if it was struck in Denver). Never saw one, and I couldn't pass up a pattern for under $30!

    That's amazing! A great use of $30!

Give us some more info, if you can. What size is it - diameter? What does it weigh? Does it have reeds? Is it clad or a solid metal? Any idea what the metal(s) is/are? Does the Martha Washington obverse look like the below picture?

  • AmazonXAmazonX Posts: 680 ✭✭✭✭

@davewesen I believe it looks like this. https://coins.ha.com/itm/patterns/-1999-1-martha-washington-dollar-judd-2185-pollock-unlisted-ms64-ngc/a/1271-5951.s

Can't get you weight or anything else cause it's in a yellow ANACS holder.

Awesome pick up! That looks like it could be in a 3-prong PCGS holder.

Is there a TrueView to go with that?
