Shipping coins to Canada from US via Fedex?

Does anyone have experience with this? Fedex told me I couldn't send anything with a customs declaration over $1000, even though it is not legal tender. How do other people do this? I obviously don't want to lie to customs, and I do have private insurance.

Send via regular mail. Canadian customs has a higher propensity to check incoming packages given the significantly higher tax rates.

Unfortunately that is not an option due to insurance purposes. I know auction houses and other dealers and stuff to Canada all the time. FedEx says that it is prohibited to send coins to Canada. Was wondering if anyone knew how they did it. I do sincerely appreciate the suggestion!
Are they Canadian coins/currency? If so no customs is required and regular US mail is just fine. If not Canadian then customs has to be involved in my experience but still the USPS is just fine. I don't deal with FedEx on coins as the USPS has never let me down yet.

USPS is the way to go. If your private insurance does not cover shipping in that manner then simply charge the customer whatever the PO is going to charge you to ship the item with insurance. Use the Postal calculator to calculate the total cost with insurance at the different service levels including Express Mail and Registered where the insurance rate will be cheaper.
