Pac Man Coin

I just got this super cool major mint error in. Looks kinda like Pac Man.
The grade is a super high-grade SMS MS68. I believe the SMS stands for Special Mint Set which for these means that the coin has a satin finish.
This leads me to questions on how a coin like this found it's way to me. The satin finish 2007 D dimes have a mintage of 895,630 while the normal circulation 2007 D dimes have a mintage over 1 billion.
The satin finished coins were blister packed all together and not rolled or bagged.
I have seen other 2007 D die caps, but I do not remember any with the satin finish. I know there was a hoard of 2007 D major mint errors released, somehow, it just seems odd to me they got out.

Way cool!
My YouTube Channel
I was the source of the firs large
batch of these that came out of
the Denver Mint, in spring of 2008,
and they were all dated 2007-D.
I'm not 100% certain that they,
or this particular one, is a true SMS.
It's very frosty, but it could be just
from numerous strikes that turned
it into a Die Cap.
In any case, it's a great coin - congrats.

that's a cool error because:

Fred thank you, and oh so many questions, but probably not for an open forum, I would love to buy you a cup of coffee sometime
I just used a lupe to look at the surface of the coin and it does appear to be the satin finish. I have many multi struck die caps and the others do not have this satin finish look. I thank you again for your insights.
EoC - I agree the surfaces are different than
any other Die Caps of this denomination or
other denoms - what I meant was that I hadn't
compared it to Mint Set Satin Finish normal coins......
And, I'd love to chat over a cup of java, but I talk
more when Dark Chocolate is in the vicinity.

Captivating coin, really interesting indeed. Thanks for sharing!
all around collector of many fine things
Fred, very cool as dark chocolate is the only way to go.
I stocked up yesterday (four day supply). I have tried many dark chocolates and at the moment this one from the 99 cent store is one of my favorites as it has awesome flavor and richness, probably from the sea salt.
Looks more like a Bit-coin to me.
SMS = Small Mouth Specimen?
Oh yeah.. that's nice!!
This coin is really very beautiful. Nice information shared on Pac Man Coin.
I would really like to know how these get out of the mint... and even more, an explanation of @FredWeinberg 's comment that he "... was the source of the firs large batch of these that came out of the Denver Mint...". Not at all sure what that means... Cheers, RickO
It just means that I was the original purchaser
of the coins when they first were offered on the market.

Just curious....was 2007 'a good year' for the production of die capped dimes or was the a production issue that caused them to be more prevalent that year? I on't know how many of these are floating around from other years as I am not a knowledgeable error collector. Really cool coin...thanks for posting!

Pac Man was originally going to be released as Puc Man, but they were worried about the P quickly turning into an F.
Definitely not somethink you see everyday. I check Coinstar machines daily and have yet to find one.
