UGH !!!
Their Not There
Yeah, well as soon as you get people to spell lose with only one "o", I'll start worrying about nickel/nickle.
I could spend all day correcting grammar and spelling on message boards. If you know what they mean by "nickle", I say just go with it.
Don't forget they're.
Spelling "nickel" correctly should be a requirement when we go to get our coin collecting license.
You are all wrong,,,,,,, it is Nikel.
I just had to look back at my last post on the currency thread and make sure I spelled Nickel correctly, I did.
Carry on...
But the coins say "Five Cents"
I guess you could call them "half-dime".
We go ballistic when people call a cent a penny, but when they call a five cent coin a nickle all we complain about is the spelling....
(I do hate bad spelling, BTW. And, now that I used the word "nickle" my spellchecker won't reject it in the future
).
I'm NOT digging on all the incorrect spellings on the message boards, just the simple coin-related ones.
If i see someone spell it quarder, then I quit.
Chris
No worries because I collect proof half-dimes.
Chris
Are we talking about three cent or five cent nickles?
@aus3000tin

I apologize for getting off the subject.....we are just having fun
Okay from here on I'm spelling it pinnie, nickle, dieme, quarder & halve doller.
I can be funny, too.

Chris

As long as folks know what they are referring to, what difference does t make?
Seriously, exactly what difference does it make towards their question or statement?
The name is LEE!
"You're" versus "your". This one makes me grind my teeth occasionally.
And the greengrocer's apostrophes everywhere. Generations of deceased English teachers are twirling in their graves.
Good to know and a great thread!
I immediately went to the Bill of Rights to resolve this matter once and for all and well I gave up after the first sentence...Congrefs

Had a teacher once who parodied the error by calling them "NICK-lees." Never have had any problems with misspelling nickel since.

I have long since buried my frustration with chat board spellings and grammar.... It was either tolerate it or leave chat rooms completely. Cheers, RickO
I Agree with ricko...there's no longer any hope for these: there/their; its/it's; to/too; then/than; effect/affect and the worst of all: regime/regimen

Don't worry ... there is help. The support group for 'nickel not nickle' group meets every Tuesday. That's right after the 'cent not penny' meeting.

That's what matters. The melting point in Fahrenheit degrees. Or 1455 Celsius. As for me, I'm partial to the overdates in 1918 and 1943. Why don't we call them "underdates" ?
All these nuances are the reasons for global warming.

You might not realize it, but your brain is a code-cracking machine.

I have noticed a trend of incorrect usage of decimal points and dollar signs. Instead of using "$.49" or "49c (cent sign) some of our local businesses are using ".49c (cent sign). I'm tempted to take our local Dairy Queen up on their offer of getting a hot dog for 49/100ths of a cent (with the purchase of any shake) and then asking for my 1/2-cent in change.
I hope you had autocorrect turned off for that.
Interesting.
I sometimes try to mess with friends by text by using different words that say what I want to say phonetically, but are confusing when read. Not the best examples off the top of my head, but: Watts knew? Wear due ewe want two meat?
In your example, bad spelling can be overcome pretty easily by the brain, but when different but legitimate words are used incorrectly, the brain stumbles a bit.
I had a 6th grade teacher that would make you donate a penny (
) to a pot on her desk if she heard you say the word "ain't". It's a good thing she never heard my song about it or I wouldda went bankrupt!
Ha ha yes I had to. It kept messing it up it was a sea of red.

Don't get me started on the Lincoln Cent calling it a Penny
I think I'll go to England and use the word "cent" in place of the word "penny" or "pence" and see what happens.
"Double" die instead of the correct doubled die bugs me, as does most of the others mentioned.
.
I think it's because it rhymes with PICKLE. Funny how nobody spells that wrong. PICKEL.....nope, nobody does that.
OMG really? That's terrible. I guess not many spell it correctly. Maybe we should take a stand and make all new members spell it until they get it right. N-I-C-K-E-L
