Thought I was in the PM forum. Oh well...I bought an Eagle in a PCGS holder so I am cool.
May I see the picture @Coinstartled ?
Cohodk will be along shortly with a chart showing that todays price was predicted in 1917.
Always liked that design, and thought it was wasted on a non-circulating coin. It looks so good on the 1/10 ounce coin, it should have gone on the dime! (With a full non-presidential redesign of coinage).
It is a common practice in many jewelry shops that work with gold to "send their carpets to the smelter".
This involves a middleman who buys the carpeting on spec on a regular basis having established what "fair value" might be.
In this instance the smeltering operation might consider platinum as an unpaid-for impurity on purchase but would do some additional recycling of its own.
To your specific instance: if your Sunday purchase is not a happy one and you try to sell the coins to a middleman, don't expect to get paid for the plastic.
edited to add: LOL, composed before BST intention revealed.
... or beaker ?

A friend had a once very active jewelry show with a full time guy at the bench. They never thought about sending out the carpet until a local metals dealer stopped in and suggested it. Something like 7 or 8 oz of 14k came out of the thing.
Errant post.
I'm a garbage collector !!!
I have heard of the jeweler's carpet scrap before. The first time was from an actual jeweler who told me why his work area was carpeted. Cheers, RickO
