Please Post your RAW eBay Coin Purchases

I've been considering doing a raw quarter set for awhile and have been glancing at every so called raw UNC & AU on eBay. I glanced from highest price down thinking that might remove some of the issue coins. Well... Whew what a battlefield as I only saw 2-3 coins which didn't have problematic surface conditions that instantly jumped right out just based on the photos.

So what beauties has anyone found hidden among the eBay ugliness?

I found this "raw" 1863 Detroit Civil War Store Card Token on e-bay in February 2018 and purchased it immediately. When I got it in hand the token was even better than the photo. It was conservatively graded by the seller as Choice Uncirculated and virtually full red with cartwheel lustre.

This was an upgrade to my Detroit CW token collection which is complete by merchant.

WDP, That's a really nice example.

RAW tokens & medals seem to be a completely different jungle than coins to navigate through on eBay.

I've picked up a bunch of raw coins on eBay over the last couple of years. I'm not willing to pay much, so I don't take much of a gamble on them on eBay. But I did score this nice 1942 Walking Liberty Half Dollar DDR FS-801 unattributed for around $35.00. I'd call it a strong 64 with a shot at 65.

WDP, That's a really nice example. Thanks @Jimnight and @Broadstruck!

I've been collecting these for over 25 years and this one in this condition had eluded me. I'm very happy to have it.

My Franklin half set is raw in a Capital Plastics holder— there’s just as many nice raw Frankies out there as certified and I love hunting them at coin shows/ eBay.

HT-77, Low 162, Martin Van Buren, Copper, 24mm.

I can't remember when I picked this up but it was within the past couple of years. It has some minor surface issues, but it is a R-5 and I got it cheap. :) Recently photographed.

I picked up a quarter this month and was hopeful it was going to me unmolested. The photo looked OK to me but the lighting angle sure hid all those little hairlines that covered the surface! All I can say... GOOD LUCK!!

For raw eBay purchases, I have to push the "way-back" button. I haven't used eBay as a primary source in a long, long time.

At least one of these was purchased by mistake! I wanted one...ONE...Bust Half for my Dansco type set album. I put in bids on both of these, same seller, in hopes that my usual pathetic bid would win ONE of them. Well, in true Murphy fashion, I won both of them....and at the time, either one would have been my "biggest purchase ever!"

They've since been sent to PCGS, not because they needed it, but just because I wanted to. And they got free TrueViews, just because they were free. I like 'em....beat up circulated grades or not. Part of my personal "collecting history".

Yeah you need to look double a much at any coin that's photographed with a point-n-shoot camera or a phone. Unlike a DSLR which is fixed in a copy stand with a free handed camera you can sneak up on the coin at any angle to make it seem better then it really is with a glamour shot.

I too bought a quarter which is to arrive shortly and have known the seller for about 14 years. He's still using a turn of the century circa 1999-2001 1-2 mp point-n-shoot camera. He mentions luster and toning is subdued due to the lack of his photography skills. It will be interesting as it looked promising and I bought a lot from him over a steady course of 5 years never having to have made a return.
